manchu Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Hugely popular French electronic music duo doing world album launch from a small tiny country town agricultural show in NSW. Brilliant, but just a little strange. They're not actually playing unfortunately, just streaming the album from there apparently. 4000 tickets, all sold out, just to listen to a CD play for the first time!. oz news.. http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/wee-waa-counts-down-to-daft-punk-party-and-launch-of-their-album-random-access-memories/story-e6frfn09-1226643344610 and even in the world news http://www.nme.com/news/daft-punk/69652 judging by the youtube channel the town seems to be getting into the swing of it http://www.youtube.com/user/RoadToWeeWaa?feature=watch
pete_mac Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I'm surprised that they released the album for sale prior to the Wee Waa event, as it somewhat undermines it. It's certainly a bit different from their earlier stuff. I wouldn't pay to see them play it live (unlike their earlier stuff) but I'm starting to enjoy the album for what it is. Quite a bit of disco influenced stuff, a tribute to Giorgio Moroder, and guest vocalists throughout.
shaky Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 And has been well played on triple j this week as their feature album of the week. A strange thing again for the radio station to do seeing as though it was heavily promoting the Wee Waw event weeks ago when the proposed launch was announced. A lot of disappointed listeners no doubt due to the way this has eventuated I'd say.
Upfront Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 There is something else going on me thinks! Stay tuned.... Perth sux for this sort of thing. I think the people of that little town are in for a treat! Lucky buggers!
davewantsmoore Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Like the content or not... this album is very very well recorded. :-D 1
millsy Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 Anyone got a hold of it on Vinyl yet? How's it sound vs CD?
bigbuddha Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 I'm just not feeling the new album ... try as I might ...
davewantsmoore Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Many people I know are disappointed.... but I think they were expecting the wrong thing. They went exactly where I thought they would. Cinematic, movie-like, tribute to 70/80s. Some of it is a little avante-garde .... but there are some Awesome moments! 3
bebop Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 I really enjoy this new Daft Punk album. Weekend of Daft Punk at my place. Their two previous albums and Tron Legacy.

Cinematic, movie-like, tribute to 70/80s. Some of it is a little avante-garde .... but there are some Awesome moments! Yeah, after the first listen I was somewhat disappointed as I had built up an expectation that it would be club-oriented and 'danceable' (eg Alive 2007) but the more I listen and reflect upon it, the more it grows on me.
acg Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Have any of you guys downloaded this album? I see it is on Qobuz as 24bit but I cannot con a download out of them because I am in oz.
Phantom Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Absolutely love the album. Nice to see the people at Wee Waa having some fun too and joining in with the event 1
tre0001 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Took me 3 or 4 listens to get into it, but now i have really started to enjoy it.Instant Crush is my personal favorite atm.
davewantsmoore Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Have any of you guys downloaded this album? I see it is on Qobuz as 24bit but I cannot con a download out of them because I am in oz. Has there actually been a 24bit digital release? Otherwise, this is either upsampled or captured from LP
bebop Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Qobuz has a 24/88.2 version available. However, we are unable to buy it due to us not being in France (I tried). Its a shame as I am really enjoying this album a lot, and would love a hi-res version.

DoggieHowser Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Not their usual style but a nice retro feel to it. Love the Giorgio tribute
acg Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 (edited) HDtracks have just added the 24/88.2 to their catalogue so I am downloading it at this very moment along with the new Nationals album in the same format. Woo hoo! Anthony EDIT: the new album from The National is 24/96. Edited May 22, 2013 by acg
DoggieHowser Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I thought the HR version was very good. Seemed better than the CD rip.
millsy Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 (edited) I've listened to a vinyl rip to whet my appetite whilst I wait for vinyl to land on the ground here, I thought the dynamics seemed a bit better but wasn't too sure. Anyone know if the HR version is a different master to the CD one? Or just the CD in better quality. Edited May 22, 2013 by millsy
bebop Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 If this DR Database is any indication, it seems the vinyl has the best dynamic range. The HR and CD versions seem to have the same DR. I'll probably end up getting the vinyl as well down the track (spent too much on music this month already).
davewantsmoore Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 Ok. Cannot hear a difference between the CD and the 24/88 .... but can see the difference in Audacity clearly. Also downloaded a vinyl capture. It did sound different. I felt it had more "groove" to it (pardon the pun) ... and was more engaging. It's possible I was hearing things.
