samman Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Got my Oppo 95 back on Friday from Joe of JLTI fame, and have been spinning standard CD's and some hi res files over the weekend. All I can say is WOW absolutely sensational sound, depth, clarity, definition, resolution. For me a world class spinner. Time to reacquaint myself with my CD collection....
samman Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 As per the advertised cost on the website $1700 if you supply the player.....
Decky Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Did you put it next to an unmodified player and try A-B-ing?
Phantom Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I am really pleased you are enjoying the change, it's great when something you do or buy is really special. Enjoy. 1
samman Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 Did you put it next to an unmodified player and try A-B-ing? Yes ....the modded player is in another league.
A J Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Did you put it next to an unmodified player and try A-B-ing?Yes ....the modded player is in another league. You would hope so
Decky Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 Yes ....the modded player is in another league. In what ways - softer in the ouput, more or less revealing? What are the actual changes apart from the clock upgrade? Thanks
samman Posted May 13, 2013 Author Posted May 13, 2013 I believe there is a significant upgrade to the clock used, not sure on the specifics of other changes made to incorporate this change, sorry. The upgraded player has a totally silent noise floor, a larger dynamic range and absolutely no distortion that I could hear. Yep the upgraded player is more revealing, great with well recorded music, not so with poor recordings. The sound quality of the new player is simply superb....
MrRogers Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 May it bring you lots of musical pleasure. Add some Malbec and you've got it made!

All I can say is WOW absolutely sensational sound, depth, clarity, definition, resolution. For me a world class spinner. Time to reacquaint myself with my CD collection.... I also have a JLTi Stage 3 Oppo BDP-95. Had a listen to Joe's newly modded JLTi Stage 3 Oppo BDP-105 on Saturday night in his listening room. I put on the last movement of the Mahler 2nd Symphony (SACD) conducted by David Zinman (stunning performance and recording), which I got a few days before and had only heard in my car on the way to work. On Joe's 105 and his system overall, it was the most realistic digital music reproduction I've ever heard in my life. Then listened to a couple of CD tracks I've listened to before on my own JLTi Mk3 Oppo 95. His speakers are in a league beyond mine, but I use the same amplifier, so I have a fairly good feel for the differences between the two players. The JLTi-modded 95 sounds a little darker than the modded 105 I think. Put another way, the 105 sounds slightly more airy. Hard to say which I prefer, but probably the 95 by a whisker. Both rank among the best players I've ever heard. In the same price point, I doubt there is another player which even hints at the performance of of the JLTi modified Oppo 95 or 105. Cheers, Warren 1
Warren M. Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 In what ways - softer in the ouput, more or less revealing? What are the actual changes apart from the clock upgrade? Thanks It isn't very meaningful out of context, but the level 3 mods to the Oppo 95 and 105 start where almost no-one else in the world goes: The Bulk Acoustic Wave crystal oscillators which are used to independently control the master clock and the DAC clock are dumped in favour of a Surface Acoustic Wave oscillator which runs at over 120 Mhz, and synchronizes the two clocks. Even without all the other ingenious enhancements to circuitry, this alone results in a profound improvement in musicality (I heard the difference going from the double-speed BAW to the super-speed SAW oscillator). By using such a high speed clock, the superb ESS Sabre DAC can be driven in "SuperCurrent" mode which apparently is the reason for some of the magic which the JLTi version wields. It can only be driven this way in the 95 and 105. The output circuitry is radically simplified by using audio grade transformers. for any more meaningful description, you would need to speak to Joe. As for the sound, see my earlier post. Cheers, Warren
AudioGeek Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 Do the mods to the 105 work with the digital inputs (ie in DAC mode)? I have heard that one weakness with the oppo players is the anologue output stage - is this modified as well?
