Shipment delays from Eastern States recently

Recommended Posts

I placed an order for a hifi equipment three weeks ago through a hifi retailer in Perth. After 10 days of not receiving it, I rang the retailer after 10 days only to be told that there has been a general delay of shipment from most couriers from the East because of floods in SA. I presume that the floods have caused the items to be held up in SA because the couriers may be waiting for items from NT to stock up their truck before moving to WA. As plausible as it sounds, it has now been three weeks and going into the fourth week. I have called the retailer on Friday morning and they have yet to come back to me.

Just wanted to ask my fellow West Aussies if they are experiencing any such delays with their purchases.

Wow three weeks from the East to Adelaide is a long time. It usually takes about 5 to 7 working days to Perth however this has been the longest I have experienced. Floods and COVID would likely be the main reasons behind the delay and us being so strict at the borders did not help either. So the phenomena is real; good to know.

In our experience this has been going on for some time, we ordered Christmas presents in October & November that took in excess of 6 weeks to be delivered.

On 21st January I ordered an item from a Sydney audio store, it was large and heavy, it was dispatched on 24th January and arrived on 27th January.

Back on 17th October I ordered a pair of speaker stands from UK (no dealer in Australia) they were in my home set up being used on  25th October, on the same day we ordered something from 'Catch of the Day' it arrive late November.

I think Covid is being used as a convenient excuse.

Supply chain disruption globally, nationally and locally in Western Australia has been an ongoing issue for a couple of years.

Major events (global and domestic) have included the blockage of the Suez Canal, a worldwide shortage of shipping containers due to China lockdowns, restriction of Australian port movements due to industrial activity, flooding and damage to the only East-West rail line in the country etc - basically, it's been a shitshow of the highest order.

I ordered a console table a few months ago from a retailer in Melbourne. It was finally shipped a couple of weeks back. Parcel 1 of 2 made it through before the floods; parcel 2 of 2 is now a few weeks behind. It's just the way it is...

The floods are real, essentially disconnecting WA from the rest of the states.

My courier drive told me on Friday that they are actually not even picking up consignments heading from East to West as they are just backing up in the depots.

I heard from the news that courier drivers in Perth are running out of work because there are no parcels arriving from the East for delivery mainly due to the floods in SA. Oh well, at least I did receive a call from the retailer confirming that they have spoken to the supplier who said that they are facing some logistic problems with their courier.

Supply chain disruptions? I suppose that varies from case to case.

My new turntable left Europe very late Thursday (Aust. time) and has already arrived in Melbourne today. With 2 of 3 boxes delivered!

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm pretty sure it didn't come on a boat, in a shipping container, through a port, and finally by rail across the Nullarbor... 😉

For some of our distributors we are only experiencing an extra day or two delay, for stock from others, there has been delays for stock that left the East as far back as the 18th January, so some services seem to be better than others.

IMO what's worse than the delays is the lack of any communication about what is actually happening. I've been trying to get any information other than "in transit" and some companies won't even answer their phones or email.

I concur Greg.

Still waiting for several items l ordered late December/early January. Happened before the flooding. But l guess, what with covid, everything is compounding now.

Now the tracking number has expired, and l can't get the seller or Aus Post to accept responsibility, or even get back to me. Not giving up... obviously. But beyond frustrated, as l have received some mail posted mid February. So not sure what the issue is, but l still think it's a postal issue. Say again... frustrating!🤬

Contact the seller and ask for a refund or replacement if they can't deliver or at least provide positive information. Your contract is with the seller, not AusPost.

Cheers mate.

I did do that. First thing this morning via email. They have had a week to get back to me....more than enough time. Let's hope they reply. No phones number unfortunately. Bought quite a bit from this seller. Good quality and usually good service. So confident it will get sorted.

Well, an equipment I bought on Monday from Sydney reached the Perth depot today, hopefully to be delivered tomorrow according to their tracking info.

I believe in supporting local business. There is convenience associated with any warranty issues too. The only disadvantage is that you do not have the tracking info and have to rely solely on the local business to inform you when it is ready to pick up. Life is short.

By the way the equipment I bought from Sydney was a deal no retailer in Perth was able to match. Would have love to support local in this case however........the saving was too great a resist.

No dealer or just the dealers you did try??

Post is a nightmare - I ordered 2 x LPs from JB that came from Hobart to Gold Coast - and still waiting ............nearly 6 weeks now & the tracking number has disappeared. I have contacted JB who have raised it with Aus Post but they say JB have to wait until 15th Feb to chase up again! In the meantime had deliveries from Germany & UK that arrived within 2 weeks....................

I always pay with Paypal., and where goods I’ve purchased seem to have disappeared without a trace,  I lodge a Paypal dispute. It’s surprising how helpful everybody becomes when they are contacted by PayPal to resolve the issue.

Having said that, always pay for Express Post or Star track and if it is  not an option, if it’s not available at the shopping cart  contact them to see if you can make an arrangement to pay a bit extra for it.  Standard Post is not being prioritised in the current climate and should be avoided.

it also pays to be mindful that some courier services use road freight and aren’t quick at all

If anyone is not sure WA stands for "Wait a While".

Yesterday, Thursday, a fellow member posted to me my purchase in the classifieds. Queensland to Perth; today I received the tracking details and expected delivery date, mid March the latest; and any date in-between.

Perth has always had a poor postal service because all freight is flown to Sydney or Melbourne, then sent via road or rail to Perth. Two weeks ago the initial flooding in SA eroded the structures under the railway tracks. We were told via the media, that working 24/7 it would take 14 days to fix. As the flooding continued, the road became flooded, stopping the trucks altogether. Then, as all bad things seem to come in three's, there was a fire at the border crossing, gutting 5 trucks and causing the border to be closed for two days.

With the road and rail being the life line to Perth I don't understand why they don't mobilise the Army Engineers to install semi-permanent bridges or rail supports. It could be a valuable training exercise for them. After all, if there had been a war or civil unrest they would have done it already!

Hi-Fi is a luxury item that I can wait for.

Going to Coles, Woolies and Aldi and finding no meat, eggs, cheese (or any diary products), no paper products (I suppose no need for that if I am not eating 🙂 ) is an inconvenience for sure.

We are also restricted on items we purchase, when they are there. When there is meat it is only two packs allowed per shopper,  1 loaf of bread, 2 milk cartons. I feel sorry for families with two kids, must be a nightmare.

My wife and I just buy what is available and change our diet to suit. Being diabetic I am already restricted which makes it a bit harder but I will survive. I have been told if the Chemist runs out of insulin I will be going in to hospital; at least I will get three square meals a day!

Strange to go into Bunnings and see rows and rows of empty shelves. My wife's Ford car needs new front wheel bearing and CV boot, been waiting 6 weeks so far.

All first world problems, I guess we have been spoilt, we are used to getting what we want, when we want it.

We also have enough deep port mournings in Perth for the transportation of natural resources as well as the loading and unloading of containers from freighters. Perhaps in times of crisis they should start shipping essential goods by sea from Sydney/Melbourne to  Perth.
