Now lockdown is over, I can’t wait till my neighbours leave the house or better yet go on holidays so I can crank it.

Any one else in a similar boat?

I believe you're looking at it the wrong way, l currently don't have anyone living either side of my house!

Do you think that's a coincidence?? 😂

There's your other answer, if you can't beat them - move !! 🤔

A secluded mountain top does sound perfect for a license to crank it.

That’s just not on the cards for me. At least my situation is better than when I was living in a unit.

No probs here .. on 1.2 acres, sound treated room and plenty of gap to either neighbours, none at the back.  Last house i used to get complemented on my choice of music, only thing is needed to turn off the subs by 8pm as they carried half way down the street 😆

Maybe chat to them about their music genres and see if you can fit in ?

How loud you wanna crank it?

Maybe I'm getting soft as I get older, 80db is about my limit these days and the neighbours don't seem to mind.

Apartment living, I get complains over 65db (with bass) sometimes.  Oh how I wish I didn't otherwise love the city lifestyle.

I don’t play late at night, well past 10pm anyway but we regularly get to 110dB here. If the neighbours are complaining I can’t hear them

My normal level is about 80dB to going by a free iPhone app, but just like having a fast car or motorcycle it’s fun to stretch it legs every now and then ;)

I have paid good money for my gear and only turning it up a only 10% (seriously) on the dial makes me wonder what it all can really do.

I'm the same...although my wife is less considerate after a few drinks :(

I play plenty loud in a leaky room but not for long and not late - so far no complaints or cops (we've been here since 2010).

My daughter had a similar problem up in Stawell years ago. She had my old mid 90's Technics stereo in her bedroom, come Saturday as the standard issue washing / clean the house day, the stereo got its weekly workout. Being a small country town the day to day noise isn't the loudest, so it didn't take long before the neighbors remarked about the loud music.

Now the girl is not backward in coming forward lol, her response was to head over to the rear neighbors (I was in the SES with the dad years before hand so she kind of knew them) proceed to give them her mobile number so they could text her with requests during the day lol. She ended up getting messages from a few of the neighbors to play this or play that. Helped to broaden to music knowledge as well.

Our back neighbor is a 80yr old lady who spends her weekends in the garden pottering about, it's not unusual to hear a bit of Vera Lynn or similar coming from our place at her request lol

That's loud "in room" and a bunch of that volume would get to the neighbours

That's not that loud for the "in room" level - certainly not "party" levels - my neighbours cop that level way past midnight from my wife when she's not playing the stereo loud.

When she cranks it past 10pm I intervene.

Don't think my neighbours like me much on movie nights. Listening to music isn't quite as loud.

that's painful - lively discussion at a dinner party would be louder than 65dB...the hubbub of a party would be way louder :(

I usually set my my SPL meter for "C" weighting to include the bass.

For me an 80dB SPL "C" weighted average with peaks of say 85-90dB is getting loud - but not cranked.

Occasionally my peaks hit 110dB SPL "in room" - not often, and never late at night - and that's plenty loud.

I've taken my SPL meter into our band practise room on occasion (where I always have hearing protection) and measured peaks of 120dB - insane volume :(

Agreed 75DB is enough for me nowadays no complaints ever except from my cats, maybe they need to move.

Will sound proofing your apartment help?

Sound proofing/effective sound isolation is best applied during the construction phase.

What would you suggest to improve the sound proofing of @JMM's apartment?

True, every now and then its great to turn it up.

Just remember guys, prolonged exposure past 85db (I think) damages hearing.

Don't want those systems to go to waste later on 🥲

Probably did enough damage early on attending concerts without protection so gotta be mindful now.

If you haven't seen "Sound of Metal", it's a great movie about a musician coming to terms with hearing loss.

Don't mean to get all serious on y'all...
