Bah Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 Anyone used one of these DVD players? Plays dixv/xvid Wireless Lan/Ethernet for streaming Card readers looks interesting, but what of the quality? hrmm
shiny_car Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 yes, quality may be an issue. if it's the one i'm thinking of, it offers DV-I output which is nice, and the cheapest one with this feature. but whether the audio output, reliability and build quality are so good...not sure. :? and it's the 'audio' side of things on such a player that bother me. i would personally like a high-end audio section included too. one with the latest 'feroudja' decoding engine (eg: FLI-2310) which is renowned for its excellence. but of course that'd be overkill unless you had an amp and speakers to match, say for DVD-A and SACD. but likewise no point having DVI output if you don't have a HDTV/display. i personally shy away from no-name brand stuff, but perhaps for no good reason. although things like warranty and repairs may be a little easier with bigbrand stuff and their repair centres.
Bah Posted September 5, 2004 Author Posted September 5, 2004 Richard, this is the one I'm talking about http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880n.html hrmm and the spec's http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880nspec.html They don't quote what video and audio processors they use... I guess it would be a good player that would run everything including divx/xvid, just not SACD and DVD-A, but I think those formats are yet to really take off as a mass produced medium.
shiny_car Posted September 5, 2004 Posted September 5, 2004 ah ok. it's the 'N' model. the one i've seen advertised doesn't have the USB/network connectivity. and of course, it doesn't matter what audio chipset it uses if you utilise the digital output and rely on the home theatre amp for processing. as you say, it merely lacks the DVD-A/SACD decoding, for which the chipset would be important; otherwise, 'no'.
Bah Posted September 5, 2004 Author Posted September 5, 2004 now what about DVD playback? I haven't had a change to properly test two dvd players on the one tv. I have a $99 dvd player, one of those Nintaus ones I got a year ago from JB HiFi, it plays everything I feed it, it doesn't have optical out but ah well. The picture looks just fine, I can't tell much difference between it and my SD digital set top box so, I'm not sure how a better quality dvd will help. I'm itching to try...seems like a very good dvd player can be had for $200-$300 nowdays... Has anyone tried a cheap dvd player compared to a nicer one say sub-$500 in value?
