No progress as I wait for items to arrive. At least lockdown is keeping the couriers busy 🤷‍♂️
@Grizzly tells me the brass plates are nearly ready so I’m getting excited. He was also good enough to order all my required screws and bolts locally.

In other news @tubularbells has been working on another project for me….

Is that a Holton amp module?

I love a good plywood but havent come across one with an American Oak Veneer.

Iron on veneer has been challenging in the past to get right.

Maybe I need to do a course.

If anyone knows a supplier of veneered plywood in Australia I would like to know.

Also does any one know where to get the acoustic felt around the drivers.

and was it glued on or velcroed?

Thanks

Which parts are you looking for, is it to replace the existing on a Duntech speaker?

I think @tubularbells would be keen on new felt for his Sovs and I’d also be keen if we can get a bulk order done.

Here is the felt pics as requested

Nice work on the tweeters 😊

Felt can be laser cut.

I tried it with my little diode laser and it works, but leaves a slightly burnt surface, and also leaves a lasting smell of burnt hair 😄

Perhaps a CO2 laser would work better, but I don’t have one of those… yet! The cheapest Chinese CO2 laser cutter is around $500, and only has a 200mm x 300mm cut area. One day…

I think the biggest issue with the felt is matching the density of the original from previous investigations. How much difference that makes is difficult to determine though.

Excellent score on the tweets!!

Water jet perhaps?

I imagine the smell would be horrendous?
The place I posted seems to die cut felt. Not sure how thick they can do it.

@frednork

I’m not sure about the density either

Pretty sure I could find out what sort of felt to use, it’s just finding a way to cut it.

Speaker manufacturers use die cut felt, the only catch with short runs though is paying for the tooling/dies to be made.

If anyone knows anyone with a CO2 laser I’d be very interested to find out if it cuts felt well - the most basic CO2 laser will have around 5 times the output power of my diode laser, and may very well vaporise the felt into a clean cut.

Edit: oops just remembered a mate of mine has a 300w laser, although I rarely get out to his place 😄

Felt cutting tip.

Clamp the felt to a board and use a really sharp Japanese chisel.

If that is too messy, cut the shape in 12 mm ply, clamp to the felt to squash it then use the really sharp chisel.

I am talking 8000 grip wetstone sharp.

I did a tool sharpening course at Rozelle about 25 years ago.

I think we may be lucky as the cuts are really only a big hole and a star. The shapes are used pretty regularly in felt craft.
I’ll see this mob near me and see why they say. If you look at the star it’s really only made of square cut outs

@Sub Sonic if you can find out what felt is used that would be awesome

Lots of good information about velcro.

There are a number of suppliers of American  Oak veneered plywood in NSW (and other states) who can help you out shovel. They include:

Bord

Plyco

Briggs

Mister Plywood etc.

A number of them will supply the size/amount you want, cut to size etc.

Google will give you extra names, including possibly one reasonably close to you.

I wonder if these guys would be good to see about felt?
They are local to me but also in South Australia. Been around a long time.
I wonder who did the original felt for Duntech?

I think you may be on to something: https://www.jjdavies.com.au/saddle-felt

Looks like the sound deadening saddle felt to me....

I would be keen to get some for future projects if some one is doing a bulk buy.

I imagine their minimum quantity is a fair bit.

But I am still pondering why cowboys need sound deadening in their saddles?

Maybe all those beans they eat in the movies.

I had these guys make me up a single felt surround for tweeter and midrange for my Osborn Epitomes, in one piece.  They had a limited range of wool felt and none had the same density as what you have with the Duntechs.  I know because I took some Duntech padding along with me off a friend’s Princess.

These guys did a great job of the laser cutting. I drew up a template on paper and they cut to those exact specs.  Even has the nice 8 pointed tweeter space that the Duntechs have.
