Hi all, I’ve recently moved from Adelaide to Sydney and unfortunately my Yamaha A1 integrated amp didn’t make the journey..

Could someone recommend a Sydney based repairer who could take a look?

Fault:
Very rhythmic ticking sound starts up when amp is switched on and gets louder when the speakers are activated.
I am hoping it is just some wiring that has come loose on the drive.
Amplifier will not send signal to speakers while making this noise.
it is not intermittent, same sound each time.

Thanks so much,

Ah, thats a shame!

Considering the restrictions in Sydney, it might be helpful to know where in Sydney.

If you're around inner west, you can check out classic-hifi.net, they are located in Newtown. I've been to their store and the owner seemed pretty switched on. Almost used them to get my Marantz PM300 serviced... instead ended up purchasing another amp.

GL and welcome to Sydney.

Hi, thanks for the recommendation re Classic Hifi in Newtown, I will give them a call.

I'm in Hurstville so a point to  point courier to Newtown is reasonable.

Thanks again !

You could try Speaker Hospital > https://www.speakerhospital.com.au/?_sm_nck=1

They fix amps according to their website.  Whilst I have never used their services, I walk past regularly and usually have a fair bit of gear in there.

Hi Jeddie, I hadn't considered Speaker Hospital! Name is a little misleading, haha. Thanks for the suggestion, checking out their website now

Now that Chris at Kimil has closed, who is next best amp repairer?

I recently took a tube preamp in to Tim at tunedinaudio.com.au. he v did an excellent job at a fair price...

There isn't an obvious address on the website. A friend is asking for a repairer, I don't need one at present.

He works from a workshop in his home. So give him a call on the number on the website and he'll give you all the details.

I took my amp to Tim at tuned in audio and 7 months later still nothing he doesn’t answer my phone calls or messages, I’ll just have to turn up and take it back.

Can give Classic HiFi in Newtown a call, they have an in-house technician that does the repair. I'm not sure of the turn around time as the technician is there on part time basis, this was over a year ago when I visited the shop.

Anyone knows what happened to Chris Kimil? He was the best. I know the sign on his business last December reads retiring? He's too young to retire. Did he win the lottery Division one prize?

He retired as at the end of 2024. He did my Rotel power amp as one of his last jobs.

Bugger. I want him to return. I don't trust the others know what they're doing, particularly with tube amps.

It seems to be a real issue in Sydney at the moment finding a replacement that matches the expertise of Chris.  I'm in same position in that I require a tube amp that requires a service and finding it difficult to find a reliable and competent technician.  I contacted Tunes in Audio but got no response.

Yes, a really big hole in the industry.

Chris looked after my vintage DD turntable  - he was brilliant.

I also tried to contact Tunes in Audio several times  - also zero response.

I have my table in with another tech recommended to me. 4 months later, still not fixed and he seems stuck.

Just shows how much of a wizard Kimmel was.
