Further information:

These were my fathers pride and joy in the 80's, 90's, I grew up listening to them myself. My father recently passed away and nobody in our family has room for them anymore.

They're in good condition for their age, (a little dusting required), and come with stands.

They're located in Cremorne NSW in my brothers garage and you're welcome to inspect them before buying.

Pickup only please

Any questions please send a message.

I remember these Australian made speakers when the first version were released around 1977/78, they were the AMW 440...because they cost $440 without stands.

AMW made some changes/upgrades a few years later, and they became the more expensive AMW 4100 which you have for sale.....I think they originally sold around the $750/800 mark

They were pretty good speakers in their time, and a lot of people who couldn't afford to get a pair of GALE GS401's or the later GS 401C's which were nearly twice the price used to buy these instead.

They are pretty big speakers as you have mentioned [Think Spendor BC1/ Harbeth SHL5 size], and anybody thinking of buying them NEEDS to have them out from the rear walls at least 750cm, as they will be really bass heavy otherwise.

If I were the buyer, I'd either mass load the tube steel stands and place some sort of granite/concrete paving stone under them, and raise them, or get some other open framed stands that were at least 10cm taller, and still place them of previously mentioned pavers, this will tighten up the bass no end.

That oval bass driver suffers too much from floor boundary effects on their current stands.

Certainly worth the asking price, you'd be extremely lucky getting anything better for the same money, but only consider buying if you have the room

Thanks for the information Tweaky. :)

No problem, pass the knowledge if you have it has always been my motto.......By the way, I remembered for some reason [I have a knack for remembering this trivia] that the exact original price was $820 with stands in late 1979 🙂, but if bought at HiFi shows could be bought around $120 cheaper, which they sold a lot at.

I'll take a educated guess your father bought these speakers at the HIFi show around that time that was held at the Boulavard Hotel, in Sydneys William st, near kings Cross.

AMW had the room opposite the GALE room, and everybody was dashing back and forth comparing versions of Supertramp's Crime of the Century album, or Kiki Dee's "I've got the music in me"....the memories just came flashing back. 😵

The GALE room had their speakers situated on the side of the walls, the AMW room was much bigger, and they had the speakers on a podium....certainly more impressive, as they filled the room...it's also why I remember the exact price, as I can recall the crudely printed flyer AMW were handing out with the RRP and show price on it.

AMW also ended up making even higher ranged/priced speakers, around the $1800 mark....although I don't think they sold that well, and subsequently the company folded.

More to do with the US/AUS $ at the time, as the US dollar was worth .65c AUS, so speakers like JBL, AR and Altec were cheap to buy

It was also the first time I ever saw/listened to METAXAS gear, although Kostas was trying to sell the MAGNAT Plazma tweeter at the time, and the room smelt of ozone

The AMW's got a great review in Australian HiFi magazine at the time, pity I threw all my old copies out, as I would have copied it and stuck it as a PDF

You are going to have a hard time selling them with pick up only ATM due to Sydney's lockdown...Now extended through the whole of September.😔

More the pity, as they are great speakers somebody could enjoy during this protracted lockdown

You wouldn't want to be sitting in the same room watching some general knowledge game show with me, I get told off all the time for shouting out the answers before the contestants or those in the room with me.

I get really frustrated watching people screw up on game shows giving the wrong answers.......My memory can be a bit of a curse at times, socially that is. 🙁
