Hello. I read in a review that this cartridge is suitable for unipivots and tangential arms only. Is this the case? I haven't seen this advice any where else.

I'm curious to know what the basis is, for some people say the Kleos is not suitable for a UP or tangential arm?

I hadn't heard that. Has anyone seen advice from the manufacturer that addresses this? I can't find any.

Sorry, amdan - I confused you.  :(

So I asked you:

Sorry, what I should've said was:  I'm curious to know what is the basis for some people to say the Kleos is only suitable for a UP or tangential arm - and not for a pivoting arm which is not a UP.

If a cart is suitable for a pivoting arm which is a UP, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't also be suitable for a pivoting arm which has other types of bearings.

The manufacturer just says it is suitable for medium mass arms!

@Red MacKay how would you characterise its sound and what phono stage do you use with it?

I've had lot's of phono stages through my system in the last couple of years.  Currently have a BAT VK10 hooked in with an active XYZ step up.  The SUT in the BAT are crap, but the phono itself is very alive - I quite like it.

Sound of the Kleos - very fast and clean, great clarity and it tracks really well, but slightly lean and mean.  I prefer a cart to sound warmer, I like warm/ coloured, so I might move to something else when I get using it again.  I haven't played a record in nearly 18 months...  I'll get back into it later, just not into my system right now.  I'm sure I am not the only one like this currently.

Interesting how we all have different perceptions.

I have owned all of the current Lyra carts and the Kleos was probably the warmest most rounded Lyra of them all.

Personally I prefer the Lyra Delos if you can't afford the high entry cost of Etna/Atlas.

But to answer the OP question,  Lyra can be played on any tonearm,  however it needs to have good isolation in the headshell.

What is an active XYZ step up?

I think he meant ZYX head amp, Peter.  :)

Correct.  It is battery powered and supposedly uses the same wire in it as what is in the coils for the cart.

It sounds quite good.  For me though - it lacks any euphoria factor that a brilliant SUT give.

On loan from a mate in Tassie, it is going back home quite soon so I will need to find something to replace it soon.

You might like to try the AKSA 'Paris' headamp that I build, Red?  :)  I can build them powered by a 12v SLA - although I also make them to use an Sbooster linear PS (which I've found doesn't give anything away in terms of noise floor ... but delivers better a leading edge of transients).

Thanks Red, I am seriously considering going tubes with a SUT so I am interested in hearing any suggestions on euphoric SUTs. I have a Benz wood SL cart.

Peter, the Audio Flight not synergizing for you?

I've got an Audia Flight somewhere.  I should find that and give it a run, as it has MM and MC in that too.

Peter - sure, go for a good tube MM phono stage.  :thumb:  But why oh why go for a SUT - rather than a head amp?

Benz Wood SL cart has a coil impedance of 12 ohms.  It has an output of 0.4mV - so you would use a 1:10 or 1:15 SUT, with a standard (40dB gain) MM phono stage:

  1. 1:10 typically gives your cart a loading of 470 ohms
  2. 1:15 gives 209 ohms.

Both of these loadings fall into the range that I would expect would be right for the Benz Wood SL (anywhere from 120 - 1200 ohms) ... but, from my experience with a Benz LP,  I would suggest the optimal sound comes from a higher loading than 470 ohms.

The Audia Flight is pretty much faultless but it has two MC inputs and I have a hankering for a bit of MM magic. Also having had a EAR MC4/Tron Convergence Signature in the house for a week pre lockdown I must admit to being a little enticed by valve magic.  Being SS all my life this is a novel feeling.

Even  though it is more noisy and on the warm side it has a beguiling element. Having both would be ideal but I only play vinyl for about 5-10% of my listening time.

I can live happily with either SS or valves these days.  I used to be a tube snob, but have learned the error of my bias.

Re headamps - I still prefer a great SUT - but they are few and far between.  But a really good SUT makes the music come alive  and gives it that indescribable something extra.

Peter,  if you are only playing vinyl 10% of the time, definitely something wrong 😁

Got into vinyl way too late. The last few records I bought were around $100 each so I am selective about what I buy. A few 1000 cds and hires files compares to not a lot of vinyl so 10% is pretty good.

you may be surprised digital can sound very good as well.

I’m old enough to have been buying records in the eighties. However I have never been able to get my vinyl sounding better than digital - to my extreme disappointment but as you can see, I am still trying! 😀

I was here a few years ago, having had an LP12 and RP8 both sporting expensive MC's. The RP8 was just a disappointment.

I ended up with a Technics SP10 / EPA100 and EPC205 MM and VOILA that vinyl magic. My vinyl rig now sounds way better than my digital. It's taken a lot of tweaking of the SP10 but it's now sounding better than ever since I moved the TT to another room and suspended it on shock cord.
