Candyflip Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 I've moved my hi-fi system to a smaller study room I'm using a lot while working from home, and it appears it's on the same circuit as the heater/aircon - every time the heater turns on or off (many times a day), I get a decent loud 'pop' thru the speakers. It never caused an issue previously - only since I moved the equipment this week from the lounge room, to a whole new mains circuit (one clearly shared by the ducted heating system). As it's only a rental property, what can I do to remedy the problem?
Sceeta Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 You could prove it by running an extension lead from another circuit. The A/C should be on it's own independent circuit, not a common power circuit but it may have been put in on the cheap and has been plugged into a common power circuit. Not sure if a power conditioner might solve it. 1 1
Candyflip Posted August 13, 2021 Author Posted August 13, 2021 (edited) This place's wiring is absolutely whacky Matt - the last electrician here just laughed at what they'd previously done to the place. It's guaranteed the heater/air con switch - I've been listening to it now for more than 72 hours and it exactly matches, every single time. Never a problem when the unit is not running (ie. the thermostat turns off the heating unit and fan). Edited August 13, 2021 by Candyflip

I can lend you a 10a hash filter (inside a case!) for you to try out, to see whether it does the trick, once we're allowed to mingle. (If you're currently using several ppts to plug in all your stuff ... you'll have to plug a Kambrook into the hash filter and all your gear into the Kambrook.) Just PM me if you'd like to try it. Of course, it's better to put the hash filter between the heater/aircon and its power supply - but this is probably not feasible. Andy
vinilink Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 I used to get this pop or static sounds every time kitchen fluorescent lights switched on. 1

Andy Thanks Andy - I have a sparky dropping into check our appliances for test/tag anyway this week, for the landlord. Maybe I can gently lean on him to look at the problem (this one is clearly not the landlord's issue) and suggest a 10a hash filter on the circuit for the ducted heater?
LogicprObe Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 Test and tag isn't usually done by electricians. It was a job creation scheme. Here look! He's done our electrics before too. So I might gently ask him.
GregWormald Posted August 15, 2021 Posted August 15, 2021 I had pops every time the drinks fridge in the laundry cycled, so I replaced it—no more clicks. In getting it ready for give-away I noticed that the ground wire on the plug had become disconnected! Ah well, it was old anyway and the new one is a better fridge. <shrug> Good luck finding a solution. 1
EddieT Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 Would a Thor filter board work if plugged into the outlet your HiFi is on? pretty cost effective if it does the trick. From the advice here, a Thor wouldn't do the trick I believe. Pity. Seems like I'd need a hash filter at the unit power source. That might be do-able though. I have multiple copies of the FOABP album as it's one of my all time faves of any genre, too. I can recommend them all - most sound roughly the same in play. This album is recorded at such massive levels, using samples that are hardly hi-fi, so you'll be safe with just about any vinyl copy. 1
EddieT Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 Bummer re the Thor. I just thought about it as I use one and my electrics are a total pre war job. thats great re Public Enemy thanks I’ll buy it online today 1
