Any device looking to support AV1 will need to have an AV1 decoder built-in at the chip level. Compatibility to the codec cannot be added as a firmware update for most devices. That means the very vast majority of devices out there at the time of writing aren't ready for it.

Just what we needed, more hardware upgrades. 🙃

Apple will be the last to support AV1

Indeed '  Its a good bet being open source and not proprietary like  their ALAC audio codec .. Copyright wins when you have to convert FLAC to itunes 😉

ALAC has been open-source for 10 years.

You miss my point that it was developed as a proprietary codec to keep punters in the apple ecosystem when they could just use flac - which is lossless and very popular too . only took them 8 years before they relented..  Of course they had plenty of incentive to keep it in house due to itunes  lossy AAC codec

Apple AAC is an AAC codec developed by Apple Inc. and included in Apple's audio framework, Core Audio. Core Audio is used in iTunes, Safari web browser, and other Apple products.

At the time of Apple Lossless development (~2004), not so much..... but if you're asking me to agree that Apple don't care much for supporting things outside their bubble... sure, they do that.
