Tintinsnowydog Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Hi all, Been playing around with a Stanton 500 mkii cartridge on my technics sl-1200. Enjoying the tone and bass response. However, I haven’t been able to find a stylus that doesn’t suffer from audible distortion, especially at inner grooves and busy passages. Doing my head in! Pretty sure I’ve narrowed it down to the stylus, as my AT95ML and a Nagaoka MP-110 are distortion free, all aligned the same way. I have two of these carts and both exhibit the same issue, so shouldn’t be a defective cart either. Open to any suggestions on styli, elliptical/conical or otherwise, light-medium tracking preferred but distortion-free is the priority. New production or NOS, though I had one bad experience with a NOS sealed stylus which had a cantilever so stiff I couldn’t even budge it with my finger!
cafe latte Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 The black diamond nude work well and get the one for the d71ee. Not a huge fan on the 500, the best cheap cart IMO for a Technics or indeed any table compliance permitting if we are talking vintage has to be a 681eee, again black diamond do a nice stylus for it, but if you get one with American made stylus which is likely nude with a great suspension (older ones are always great) then get it retipped. Tintinsnowydog Posted August 6, 2021 Author Posted August 6, 2021 Thanks Chris, will be on the lookout for a 681 and move on my 500s. Cheers
