Peter_F Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 Further information: For sale is a pair of refurbished Gale GS401A speakers. No expense was spared in bringing these back to life with the following work undertaken: End caps re-chromed Crossovers serviced with new attenuators, binding posts and resistors installed. One of the original caps was out of spec and had to be replaced on both crossovers. Correct spec foam surrounds installed to MF and LF drivers New diaphragms (voice coils) installed to the HF2000 tweeters New grille cloth Cabinets fully sealed internally and externally. Servicing of the drivers, tweeters and crossovers performed by Jason the Speaker Doctor. Unfortunately the refurbishing costs have blown out, particularly re-chroming at $750 after haggling from $1000! Also, Jason is the best tech and does high quality work but he's also quite pricey. But if looked after these should be good for another 25+ years!! ***** Please note local pickup and the stands are NOT included in the sale. Cheers Pete 6 2

Ooogh Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 If you live in WA, drive to the supermarket, buy your wife some flowers. Withdrawal $2,200 from the bank. Drive to Peter’s place, give him the money and carefully place the speakers in the back seat. Drive home and connect an extremely powerful amp. Sit back and realise that not only does your hifi look like it was styled by Home Beautiful but it sounds incredible. You might never get the chance again to own an absolute icon in perfect condition. 7 1

Why is it that there are never any Gales for sale in Adelaide? 3

These should sell easily Oh, there are plenty here, just that they are not for sale and we don't have a Guru like @Peter_F who can restore them if required. Edited July 27, 2021 by rantan 2 1

Another fantastic Gale restoration by Peter F with technical input from the Gale guru Jason Boyd. Really nice to see these fabulous speakers being restored to their former glory . 4

Ramcharger Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 Hi Pete, what amp are you driving them with, i have 401c gales, would love to hear 401a.
Peter_F Posted July 27, 2021 Author Posted July 27, 2021 Hey guys, thanks for the kind words. Cheers, Pete.
Tweaky Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 GALE speakers were never cheap to begin with. They were around AUS $1600/1800 New when they were available. Mainly because the Aus/UK exchange rate was very close to 2:1 back then. Great design, and these speakers can Groove. 1
THOMO Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 Yes they were a similar price to Quad electrostats.Probably about $15000-$20000 in today's money. They stand comparison with modern speakers in that price range. 1 1
Glenn Sampson Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 They look wonderful, if they sound half as good would be great, have a set myself about to be refurbished. One question, the mids are supposed to have an inverted foam surround. Not sure if this affects sounds at all or just visual.

Not sure if this affects sounds at all or just visual. Yes the mids should have inverted (concave) surrounds. The pics of the mids are a bit of an illusion as they 'appear' convex, but they are definitely concave. 1
