zenikoy Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 (edited) Seeing I was in the "catch all" category..... Streaming for mobile and background music, also new music hunting. Vinyl and digital files (CD quality and HiRes) for sit down at the hifi listening. CDs from my existing collection for sit down at the hifi listening. Only buying $2 CDs second hand these days. Steffen Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 I used to buy vinyl up until 30-40 years ago, then bought lots of CDs. I dumped all my vinyl long ago, but kept my CDs. I ripped them all and still play them (as files) regularly. I no longer buy CDs (unless something extraordinary comes along), but I do buy downloadable files. It’s like buying CDs without involving AusPost, and at potentially better quality. Before I buy I always stream (Qobuz, Apple Music) to check what I’m getting. I also stream of lot of stuff for discovery and variety. 1
JukKluk2 Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 (edited) Twenty years ago I was 95% vinyl, only playing CDs when there wasn't a vinyl version; either owned by me or unreleased. Where the CD release had extra tracks, e.g. Try Anything Once by Alan Parsons, the CD generally became the most played way of listening to that album. Nowadays, 98% from the hard drive, 1.5% streaming and 0.5% vinyl. I still purchase vinyl and CDs (which I rip to my hard drive). I do have the capability of digitally recording my vinyl but as yet I haven't done so, mainly because I have lost the physical dexterity to get down on my hands and knees to make all of the necessary cable connections, after surgery to both ankles. I also download albums, the majority of which are higher resolution than the CD 44.1/16 format. Where a higher resolution download isn't available I buy and rip the CD. If the streaming services (Qobuz/Tidal) offer a hi-res version of a CD I have ripped to the hard drive (NAS) I tell Roon to make the streamed file my Premier version. The streaming services also fill in the gap between me ordering the CD and it arriving in my letterbox. (Most of the CDs I buy I buy online. JB became almost irrelevant to me a long, long time ago, and there's no other easily accessible bricks'n'mortar music store near me.) To provide me with music for the car I load up a USB stick with CD resolution files. Luckily my CD ripping software, dbPoweramp, also has the capability of making CD quality versions of the Hi-res files that I download. A 64gb USB stick generally allows me about 160 albums worth of music, so I only need to change it every six months or so. Music on the move? Not all that bothered to tell the truth. I do have the Qobuz and Tidal apps on my phone and I do usually carry a pair of Sennheiser PX-100's with me but only very rarely do I bother. Edited July 18, 2021 by JukKluk2

Hello Brumby, You can consume goods and or services in relation to how you purchase same, so the question relates to how you buy your music, not how you listen to it. @metal beat I went with ‘Buy Vinyl’ because it is predominately in $$ terms how I purchase my music, but I do stream music too, but there was no option for that combo. I don’t buy downloaded music and I can’t remember the last time I bought a CD, but it was many years ago. Cheers, Keith Edited July 18, 2021 by cheekyboy

Believe me, I wish I could use your streaming defence too, but that is sadly no longer possible. Cheers, Keith 1 1
Hergest Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 Buy vinyl and make mixtapes on cassette. Same as I've done since 1976
Stump Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 I buy a combination of vinyl, CD's but don't download... 2
AJL999 Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 (edited) House: I have 600+ ripped CDs on a hard-drive attached to a thin client connected to the router. I used to use Spotify to stream music to whatever device, but I took the plunge and purchased 'roon', which uses Tidal. Now I have Tidal acting like Spotify, but roon defaults to my own ripped CDs first. roon lets me run different music to different endpoints simultaneously. It even allowed me to use my old Squeezebox as and endponit! Love it! Car: My Audi has no native AUX input - it forces you to use their MMI interface. I have my 600+ CD's on my Samsung mobile on a card. I wirelessly connect my phone to a Cayin N3Pro DAP via LDAC, so I use the Cayin's DAC, not the phone. The Cayin also has REAL hot tubes (Raytheon JAN6418 x 2) so I get to chose SS or Tube. The Cayin's line-out connects to the MMI via an adapter. Works very well. Edited July 19, 2021 by AJL999 1
April Snow Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 I buy Vinyl and CDs but use streaming to preview albums that I might be interested in then I chose the format I wish to buy (CD or Vinyl). I purchase from Apple things that are not available on any other format (such as remixes etc) and are iTunes Exclusives, I then burn those to CDr as backup. 2
Kaynin Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 Streaming, CD's and vinyl. All used and listened to differently, but each achieves its purpose perfectly. 2
