Latest Weather And Haze Situation (28 Feb 2021)

Cloudy conditions were observed over the central and eastern parts of the Mekong sub-region. Elsewhere in the Mekong sub-region, fair conditions persisted. Widespread hotspots were detected over most parts of the Mekong sub-region except for Viet Nam where scattered hotspots were detected. The full extent of the hotspot situation cannot be determined for the northern parts of Myanmar due to partial satellite pass. Moderate to dense haze occurrences were observed over parts of Myanmar and the central and northern parts of Thailand. The smoke haze over the eastern parts of Myanmar and northern parts of Thailand was observed to drift northeastwards into the northern parts of Thailand and Lao PDR respectively. Smoke haze occurrences were also observed over parts of Cambodia, Lao PDR and eastern parts of Thailand. Most stations in the central Mekong sub-region reported Moderate to Unhealthy air quality values. Several stations over the eastern parts of Thailand and its highland regions reported Very unhealthy air quality values.

In the southern ASEAN region, isolated showers were observed except for Singapore, parts of Peninsular Malaysia, central and northern parts of Sumatra, as well as West Kalimantan where dry conditions persisted. Isolated hotspots with localised smoke plumes were detected in West Kalimantan, central and northern parts of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia.

Weather And Haze Outlook

Some shower activities are forecast in the central parts of the Mekong sub-region in the coming days, although most parts of the sub-region are expected to remain dry. The hotspot and haze situation over the sub-region may improve slightly from mid-week. The prevailing winds over the Mekong sub-region are forecast to blow from the southeast or southwest while the prevailing winds over the rest of the northern ASEAN region are expected to blow mostly from the northeast or southeast.

In the southern ASEAN region, dry conditions are expected over West Kalimantan and eastern parts of Peninsular Malaysia, increasing the risk of hotspot activities. From mid-week, shower activities are forecast to return to these areas. The prevailing winds in the region are expected to blow from the west or northeast.
