kopiorgau Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I read somewhere that there was a Chinese movie which was an adaptation of the novel The Song of Everlasting Sorrow by Chinese author Wang Anyi. I can remember if it was produced by Jackie Chan. Any brother here familiar with this novel and the movie can help to let me know the name of the movie, please. Thank you.

kopiorgau Posted September 24, 2020 Author Posted September 24, 2020 Thank you very much brother for an instant response. Any way I can watch it on the Internet as Youtube does not show. Wonder if I can buy a copy of the DVD on Taobao. Not familiar with the Chinese on Taobao. Very much love to watch it. Any tips on internet sources for buying a copy of it? Thank you. Seems you are well versed in Chinese. I am just reading the book in English by this well-known author who was mentioned by 许子东 of 锵锵三人行 as a likely candidate for Nobel Prize in Literature among Chinese writers.
YANG Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Initially i don't know about the title when u type the English title... until i go google the title to get the chinese original name of that novel, with addition of Jackie Chan, then i got this image ...which looks very familiar to me, cos i think i may have this DVD. Even though a HK release, the Cantonese track seems to be dubbed over, and the original is in Mandarin, like 阮玲玉
kopiorgau Posted September 24, 2020 Author Posted September 24, 2020 Thank you very much. Is it about the actress Ruan LingYu alone? I think the book is about 3 women if I am not wrong. Anyway I do not understand Cantonese but I would like to buy the Mandarin version. Is your DVD in optional Mandarin and Cantonese? That male actor looks like the Hong Kong actor who acted in The French Lover.
kopiorgau Posted September 24, 2020 Author Posted September 24, 2020 Just checked by its Chinese title and found this. Costly at US$US $19.88 Everlasting Regret 長恨歌 Mandarin/Cantonese Lang Chinese/Eng Sub NEW SEALED on https://www.ebay.com/itm/Everlasting-Regret-Mandarin-Cantonese-Lang-Chinese-Eng-Sub-NEW-SEALED/193492241313?hash=item2d0d094ba1:g:29kAAOSwkJ1e1UD8
YANG Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 The movie about 阮玲玉 alone is titled as 《阮玲玉》starring Maggie Cheung, that's an individual movie directed by Stanly Kwan KumPang who also directed 《胭脂扣》which stars the late Anita Mui. Yeah... according to this product page... https://www.yesasia.com/us/%E9%95%BF%E6%81%A8%E6%AD%8C-%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF%E7%89%88/1004081561-0-0-0-zh_CN/info.html ...my DVD seems to be also come with Cantonese track. Thanks for advice. So is this movie a depiction of the story as mentioned in the book?

kopiorgau Posted October 26, 2020 Author Posted October 26, 2020 Oh I see. I though it is the TV Aspect Ratio.
YANG Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 I had the time to assess this DVD which was in my collection for certain time. A bad news perhaps... if u can take roughly 15mins(straight jump to Chapter3) or 25mins(straight jump to Chapter4) loss in the beginning of the film. I played the movie twice on 2 different players. One Philips, the other a Panasonic. Both play back suffers the same fate of beginning skip track, Philips jumps to Chapter 4 in the beginning, while Panasonic jumps to Chapter 3. As i don't find any discoloration on the information layer of the disc, i couldn't determine it's a disc fault or device firmware fault, since the DVD format, may sometime very picky on hardware compatibility. I hv titles in my DVD collection that works with one device, but not the other... So... my suggestion. U can hv the disc for free, but i think u may hv to find a way to rip to recover the data in the disc to burn/copy to another disc for permanent keep.

As this DVD carries a DTS-ES track in Mandarin. The Cantonese track is DD5.1, dubbed, and sounds very manufactured as the voice over is not very natural. Leung KarFai sounds little like Leung KarFai, but Sammy Cheng doesn't sounds like Cantonese Sammy at all! So... my advise, is to watch this in original cinematic presentation language, in Mandarin.

kopiorgau Posted October 28, 2020 Author Posted October 28, 2020 BTW sorry for having given you so much trouble in checking that copy and taking up your time.
