Hi Guys, I couldn't find any solution to my problem so I thought maybe I post here to see if anyone have experience on this.

My turntable setup just have hums that don't go away no matter what I do. It just come out recently like 2 weeks ago. The setup has been in the current position for about a year without any hums. My TT setup itself is about 10 years old.

My setup consists of the following

Project 2.9 wood TT with Denon DL103r

Clearaudio Basic Phono

Graham Slee Elevator EXP

Conrad Johnson PFR Preamp

Manley DIY 75/75 Tube Poweramp

Cables:

Mogami 2549 IC between TT to Elevator and Elevator to Basic Phono, along with grounding cable in between each devices

Furukawa Silver IC between Basic Phono and Pre

Klotz signature IC between Pre and power.

Have tried changing the interconnects (the mogamis are new), problem still there.

Have tried changing the grounding cable, problem still there.

Have tried moving the phono and elevator further away from the power strips, problem still there.

Have tried changing my previous SUT to the current Elevator, problem still there.

The hum is a low sounding hum that is quite loud after 9 o'clock. All my other input devices to the pre has no issues. It just come suddenly and refuse to go away! lol.

Any suggestion is appreciated. I'm thinking of maybe upgrading the powersupply to TT and also maybe change the cartridge.

Best Regards

Eric

Hi Eric, try disconnecting the TT from the Elevator (including the grounding cable). If the hum is still there, at least you know it's not the TT. You can then work further down the line to eliminate the suspects.

Hi cayinist,

Thanks for the reply. I just tried removing the TT connection. Interesting is, the hum is still there at original Elevator position, it's on top of the power isolator. Once, I move the Elevator away from the isolator, the hum is gone (still have some hissing song). At this away position, I plug back the TT, the hum is back again. Seems like the hum is coming from 2 source, the positioning and also from the TT.

Try repositioning the Graham Slee and Phono stage away from the amps and see (or hear) if it helps.

I had the same problem with my setup, and I found that my sensitive tube phono stage was picking up hum when it was near my power amp.

Thanks silencer13 for the replu. I have tried reposition the phono stage and elevator away. The hum is still there. But when i pluck out the TT connection the hum is gone. In this case, this hum is cause by the cartridge?

Your TT is acting as a receiver picking up noise from any of your power supply (usually power amp), try using your preamp ground connect it to a cable and touch various parts of the TT, tonearm or chassis (do not go for live cables  :P), check if hum gets softer. I have the same issue some time back, once I connected a wire from my TT motor to my preamp chassis hum went away.

Very easy to to identify. Just disconnect the cart from the phono stage and see if there's still hum. If there is, then it's phono stage. If no, the it's cart.

And like sail said, try grounding various parts and see if that works.

I can't help but notice you list the Graham Slee Elevator EXP after Clearaudio Basic Phono, shouldn't it  be the other way around. Assuming you get it right try daisy chain a  couple of chassis ground wire from elevator to Clearaudio Basic Phono follow by ground wire to preamp chassis. TT ground cable to elevator but some time depending on system, it work better direct to phono.

Yup the elevator comes before the phono. I have tried connecting the grounding cable to the phono, to the preamp, hum still there.

I try disconnecting the cables to the cartridge, hum is gone...

Try one thing attech your TT to your phono stage as if you are using a MM cartridge  ( bypass the elevator all together.) and bring volume up . This will help you to narrow whether problem is at the TT end or the elevator itself.

Yup i have tried that as well. The hum is still there. I think the hum is on the turntable. So in this case should most likely be the cart. But can the tonearm cable also exhibit hum as well?

Found the issue. Took out my old cartridge and swap with Denon and the hum is gone!

Oh well it’s time to hunt for a new cartridge. Would the Hana SL be overkill or Nagaoka MP200 is good enough??

Also anybody knows who where can I find someone to change the internal tone arm cables? These seems so flimsy. I resolder 2 connectors which break while I pulled out of the Denon cart.

As mentioned for a Fee could fix your problem. As for cartridge any of the Hana models are good depending on how much you want to spend.

Just wanna thanks everyone for helping and especially thanks to jtsamarinda for his great skills and knowledge for not just solving my problem but also coach me in understanding the world of better vinyl and hifi sound. Very friendly and humble guy! Thanks so much! I'm now enjoying the refinement, soundstage, smoothness and beautiful sound from my upgraded Cardas wired Project tonearm with Hana SL cartridge.
