exclusive Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Hi all, i have 2 nas, 1. 4 bay (main) 2. 2 bay (backup) which raid is best for home use data storage? i plan to use 4 bay as raid 10 and 2 bay as raid 0. the 4 bay nas will backup weekly to the 2bay nas.
htng Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Actually depending on what you keep on the NAS and whether you need redundancy and space. Usually what I do: 1. 4 Bay - Raid 5. Allows for 1 failure 2. 2 Bay - Raid 1. Allows for 1 failure Some ppl sync the 2 NAS together and do additional protection on some folders. In that case, the 2 Bay can be raid 0 also. End of the day, if you do raid 0 and 1 HDD dies, that is it
exclusive Posted July 8, 2020 Author Posted July 8, 2020 noted. thanks. if i set 2 bay as raid 1, i will only get 1/4 the capacity of 4 bay, hence i cannot backup all the data? since the 2 bay serve as a backup i don't think i will be that sway that the 4 bay and 2 bay dies together at the same time. in the event the 2 bay fail, i still can backup from the 4 bay and via versa.
wizardofoz Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 If all your drives are the same brand and size and batch then risk some all failing around same time if all on same time. I run 8x6TB drives in raid 5 on one NAS (38TB) and a JBOD/Raid0 for 2 x 12TB (21.7TB) drives on another 2 bay was. This covers most of the files I need to backup from the first NAS, plus I have my music (~14TB) on an internal drive on my Roon Server too.
lkypeter Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Please consider raid rebuild time in case of failure also as it can take days (not kidding) with TB size of data. Raid-5 sort of living on the edge as any further during rebuild can destroy the whole array. Raid-6 affords 2 disk failure. Oops forgot it is 4 bay whereas mine is 8 bay.

I think your selection is already the most optimum choice. I run something similar... 1. The 4-bay in RAID10 mode has good fault tolerance & performance. 2. The 2-bay in RAID0 functions more like an insurance policy. * Try to keep #2 offline, and only brought online during your weekly backups. * Helps to reduce risk of damage due to power issues, or virus/ransomware attack. * I use FreeFileSync for my weekly backup syncs to my offline HDD.
exclusive Posted July 9, 2020 Author Posted July 9, 2020 thanks all for your suggestion and advise. @Boxerfan88, shall follow your method of shutting down 2 bay nas and only starting up once weekly for backup purpose only. PS i am using QNAP nas.
wizardofoz Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 A word of caution...NAS and NAS-HDD are designed to run 24/7 and constant shutting down and on again for short periods can reduce their life expectancy too... If your NAS hardware is old then you have additional issues like being able to support larger drives too, ie My DS713+ maxes out at 12-14TB drives, same for my DS1813+...BUT worse is now my DS713+ is starting to have startup issues (the 2 x 12TB drives are less than 2 years old) so it is becoming unreliable even tho the drives are fine. Also if you are not running on a UPS then consider doing so.

htng Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 I think a lot is a heng or suay thing. The most important is your photos. Movies still can download again just need a lot of effort. If you have a 4 BAY, raid 6 is ok. I agree that the initialisation will take a while.
