hentaixp Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 Their dacs are having rave reviews particularly the entry model - ares ii . Are they that good? Most opinions on their dac are positive though there are some who feel that the sound is colored -overly smooth , warm with loose Bass.
chimaera1982 Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 I have been using the Terminator for 2 -3 years plus. Prior to that I have the Wyred 4 Sound Dac. It's a long term keeper for me. To me is quite analog sounding. I dunno how to describe it. I used to play a lot of Vinyl on a good TT. And the terminator goes on the same direction. If I upgrade probably the Totaldac but those cost a bomb. So yeah..
marshal Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 I got the Ares 1 and it is the best bang for the buck DAC in my opinion. I got previously a much more expensive DAC (also a R-2R) but the Ares smoked it. It is hard to think how they did it at this price point. YMMV.
domho8 Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Hi I have the Ares contemplating whether I should trade in for the II ver. Any bros here have heard both versions ;D
marshal Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 This might help. An audio recording of both Ares versions.
Audio Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Hi I have the Ares contemplating whether I should trade in for the II ver. Any bros here have heard both versions ;D If you intend to upgrade why not take one step higher? No point upgrading within the same model, right? Why don't do a Pontus? (Audio)

Yes, they are that good especially if you are looking for a slightly warmer sound. I had long term live-in experiences with the Pontus and Terminator (a few months) and I did not find them overly smooth or lacking in bass control. Value for money, I would take the Pontus. 1

You get more of everything with the Terminator. I think they are both pretty good DACs and the Pontus is especially good value for money. However, suggestions that the Terminator can replace megabuck DACs is stretching it. If you like a laidback and more organic presentation, both DACs will please. If you want extremely detailed sound with more leading edge, choosing your favourite ESS 9038 DAC is a better idea. Or a half-way house ? A well implemented AKM 4499/97 will do the trick. 1
