Corona11 Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Very interesting YT video, the pandemic just proved to movie studios that they are more profitable without theaters. I know many would say going to the cinemas is a social event, but money talks in the end. Comments from Trolls World Tour. Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalk
kardtoon Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 It's sad if this signals the start of the demise of theatres. I still do value a great movie in a large room with ultra large screen and amazing popcorn.
dbchoong Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Most people don't have home theater setups, so to watch a big action movies with tiny speakers - really sad... :(
kardtoon Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Most people don't have home theater setups, so to watch a big action movies with tiny speakers - really sad... :( Many of them are oblivious... a good sound bar or even built in speakers of the TV and they are happy. sometimes... we make our lives too complicated, costly and expensive :-(
DJQ Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Most people don't have home theater setups, so to watch a big action movies with tiny speakers - really sad... :( Yeah sad indeed. I can't wait to poison newbies again after all these virus goes away.
Corona11 Posted April 30, 2020 Author Posted April 30, 2020 In the end, the choices would be made for us by studio profits regardless of the experience we want, the new landscape would be profit driven and not demand driven. The pandemic has also taught an important lesson to studios to rely less on movie theaters to deliver their products and have a diversified way to distribute their contents. canoli Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 it all depends .... if there’s a vaccine then maybe in the US the traditional way may be eroded ... ie. the theatrical window vs the home video/VOD ... if it goes the way it is now; then quite simply yes .... the theatres are in dire straits ... lockdown or not. Many of us here and everywhere loves the experience of a darkened theatre and of course the unspooling of an anticipated film before us in all of its audio and visual glory. Unfortunately, we love our families even more and it’s simply not worth the risk for 2 hours of enjoyment and 14 days of isolation thereafter. As Harrison Ford said it : ‘it’s only a movie damn it’
Doggie Howser Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 There are a few things going for Trolls 2 A. It’s a kids movie and the target audience isn’t going to care too much about Dolby Atmos and the big screen effect. B. It’s cheaper to stream than paying for a full family outing. C. Parents can leave kids in front of the TV and go do something else instead of being a captive audience in the cinema. Win win. D. You have to work out the total box office earnings plus the first wave of movie rentals/purchases to be a completely apples to apples comparison.
desray Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Because of this STV (VOD) deal with the streaming companies, Universal is now taking a backlash from the movie chains (like AMC and Regal) along with The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO). This is going to affect tentpole blockbusters like the upcoming Fast & Furious 9... I agreed that Trolls will be a more suitable release to the streaming platforms than hitting the theaters since it is much cheaper. But definitely not million-dollar films...
kardtoon Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Assuming the virus gets solved for and life goes back to normal (otherwise we are all screwed..), I think this is a good challenge to movie theatres. Treat movie going as a premium experience. Don't just put together some crappy seats and small screen and expect audiences to come. IMAX and Dolby Vision at least!!
