Hi there,

got some qn, tried to search but similar threads have been quite a few years ago, so thought maybe can start a new one.

i know nothing about vinyl, but would like to give it a try, don't have a lot to throw into this, maybe $1 to 1.5 max, all in, player, phono, possibly cables if required.

i've been reading abit and the below few options keep popping up.

project debut carbon

rega p1

u turn orbit

only the first 2 seem to be avail locally, so maybe easier to stick with those?

i think there will be gems 2nd hand, but not sure how to proceed with that, (need help with setup, checking item conditions), so maybe better for me to stick with new ones?

hoping to get it in a week or two, in current situation, might have some time to play with it. though i don't have any records to try (should be able to pickup some on carousell quite easily).

recommendations, and suggestions are most welcome!

thank you.

I'm sort of in the same position and would be interested in the answers as well :).

FYI and consideration there is also the Rega P1 Plus which has a built-in phono stage. Although I read it is better to get the P1 with a separate phono - sounds better supposedly.

If I do get around to buying a TT, my inclination at the moment would be towards the Rega P1 with an entry level Rega phono. Imho Rega's build quality just seems more solid than the Pro-ject stuff in general.

And yes, I would just get a new one. The local shop support can be useful.

thanks for the replies!

@karimun

i did check your technics 1200, if at that price came as a complete set, i might have been interested.

@headfiman

i would have likely gone that way too, P1 + a basic phono from rega, i just saw a shootout video done by a local guy on youtube, comparing p1, debut carbon and some sony tt. hands down it was the p1 that won it. the debut carbon seems to just be better specced. he did some sound tests samples and it was quite obvious difference, even thru youtube and recording, you can say it is compressed and shit, but it was an A/B test where everything was equal (i think), though of course need to take with a pinch of salt.

@ohlins

that one costs almost $1500 on it's own. though not too sure what else i need to make it to work (didn't really check). but from what i read, technics tend to be made a bit more DJ direction? though with some mods and cartridge it might be good. at least that's what i read. and all i can do is read, and watch videos.

@alamakazam

i did look around, but the ones i saw, $480 for a p1 used, 2 yrs old, seriously? brand new is $560. with 1 year of warranty.  ???

Frankly, to get more bang for your buck, it's better to buy 2nd hand than to buy new.

If you're lucky and buy from a friendly seller (and in my experience most sellers in XP are very friendly), then you have the added advantage of the seller sharing with you how to use, setup, quirks etc of the turntable.

Additionally, as a first turntable owner, there are probably 2 scenarios within the next 2 years. You will either: 1) quit the hobby, or 2) upgrade to something better. Therefore, buyng 2nd hand will be easier to let go and still not lose too much money.

It needs a lot of patience to find a good 2nd hand deal. Sometimes you need to camp the classifieds for months before a good item turns up. Even then, you need to pounce fast because many others will be waiting. You also need to do your homework before hand, to know what's a good market price. As you have experienced, some sellers have no idea what the value of the equipment is. So it's up to you to check first.

I think as a first turntable, I would want something easy to set up and without too many variables to f*** up.

The Concept MM/MC series is definitely one in my book. Literally no set up needed. Put the inner platter, outer platter and belt. Done. No alignment, no balancing, no tracking force needed.

A close second would be the Audio Technica LP7 - really good bang for the buck out of the box but does require some balancing needed

Suggest clearaudio concept. A few in the market and should be within your price range.

just to update, saw one, got one, so here it is.

also the cue (not sure if it's called that) was slightly bent, wasn't supporting the tone arm AT ALL. (seller said it was ok when he tested before selling), i didn't have a chance to check cos pickup and go. i lightly bent it upwards (it was pointing down, now it's sortta level), seems to be ok now.

gave it a run to make sure at least it's working, doesn't sound good.  :-X it sounds quite scratchy now, i'm hoping cos it's just dust on the stylus (i could see strands of dust caught on the stylus) and records, waiting for the cleaning brushes to come and hope can sort it out, if not i also dunno how.

seller told me he used less than 10x and left it as it is.

looking at it, i'll likely have to spend more, to get a proper power supply at least, fingers crossed the stylus is ok after cleaning.

Bravo, welcome to the dark side.

What record did you play it on? A used or new one? Sound scratchy should be more media than stylus, even when it's quite dirty most stylus won't be scratchy, at most sound muffled.

best of Diana Krall, brand new, 1st ever, for me. it was scratchy, clicky, poppy and shrilly.

no brush or anything to remove all the dust i could see.

also wanted to check;

anyone know the power requirement for this tt?

i search the website

Power consumption Max. consumption: 1.5 Watt

Consumption in operation: 0.5 Watt

Off mode: 0.0 Watt

on the one that i was given, NOT original it says;

12v 2.5A

where would be a good place to find replacement? i'm reading some ppl powering with 12v battery, but not sure how it works.

Congrats. I just gotten Rega P1 one month before. This is one of the most popular model selling in carousell used market. Its was came with original power supply. I decided to get a custom made PSU instead of its original PSU. I was thought its LPS output with DC, fortunately the seller reminded me its actually a stepdown transformers instead, 240V to 24VAC!

Its rare to see such external power supply for audio equipment, perhaps Rega has built in AC-DC transformers.

Nevertheless, was received the Stepdown transformers after 1 month of long shipment~ and never happy to have such solid build PS!

i think the Clearaudio concept should have come with a made in Germany wall wart. i think seller may have replaced with the cheap MIC one.

yes, that is correct.

Might i ask if anyone here has this tt? can i check what is the power required? if you could please share. is it the same as the philips one in the picture?

12V 2.5A

please help to confirm.

once i have this info i can get a proper decent LPS.

thank you!

sidenote;

this is some info i found;

https://www.analogueseduction.net/power-supplies/clearaudio-smart-synchro-upgrade-turntable-power-supply.html

Mains voltage 115 / 230 V - 50 / 60 Hz

(please specify version)

Fuse at 115 V / T 2.5 A

at 230 V / T 1.25 A

Output Voltage 115 V / 230 V

(please specify version)

Output frequency Approx. 47 - 89 Hz

Maximum output power 3 Watt

Output electrical connection

Power consumption Max. consumption: 21 Watt

Consumption in operation: 20 Watt

Off mode: 0.0 Watt

this too;

https://clearaudio.de/en/products/electronics-smart_power_12V.php

Battery NiMh Battery 12V 500 0mAh

Power supply 100 - 240 V AC, 50 - 60 Hz, max. 1.4 A

Output 12 V DC, max. 1.6 A; fused (time delay fuse)

how is it, all different.  ???

or it is like there is a range? like from 1.4A (above from clearaudio) to 2.5A (the philips one i got) or something like that?

How much budget do you have left?

Maybe can ask James from Sound Affairs to do one for you. I used one of his power supplies for my old Sony TT and it was very good.

Did you listen to anything at all before taking the turntable away?

I think you were too much in a rush, you need to properly test and check when buying a turntable.

nothing left actually, likely will have to wait awhile but that will be the first thing i guess.

sadly, didn't get to test it, i would have, if not for this CB. so that's on me, being newbie.

At meantime you can get a new wall wart first to test.

If not, is seller willing to take back the TT?

yes i agree, not the best intro into records.

i've had digital for a couple of years, cds, tidal.

so i thought maybe can give this a go. well, what's done is done.

i did see this, that might work? which i think is about as cheap as it gets i suppose. it should work right?

http://store.treoo.com/ifi-ipower-low-noise-dc-power-supply.html

i'm quite doubtful about the seller taking back the item, as he claims it was all working fine, and all is in good condition when he handed it to me.

@zephyr11 - I am not familiar with your TT, but many DC-powered devices have a sticker at the bottom of the device which indicates the voltage and current rating of the device. This helps people who lose their wall-wart know what to replace it with. You can flip the TT over to see if you can find this info at the bottom.

Once you have that info, you just need to look for a wall-wart which has (please double check this, my memory is fuzzy on this) the same voltage (V); the current (A) of the wall-wart needs to be equal or more than the current specified on the device.

HTH.
