desray Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Many members have had requested for a Projector calibration workshop from me in the past and I have been reluctant to do it as it is not as easy and straight-forward as audio calibration. Of course, audio calibration too require a lot of effort to learn the craft and knowledge, however all these can be passed on or acquired along the way - e.g. from hands-on by user, picking up knowledge and know-how from various websites and of course from member's teachings as well. But so far there is no workshop set aside specifcally for video calibration. I am seriously considering to set up a trial session to see if it worth the effort to at least give it a try. The issue with video calibration is the fact that I'll be doing hands-on and glued to the laptop and screen trying to dial in the settings and majority of the time will be in a dark environment. Majority of the time, I will be speaking in the dark...something rather unfamiliar and some may considered it to be uncomforable and bored. That is why it is so hard to come up with a video calibration workshop as compared to normal audio calibration workshop. Before I can even consider embarking on this workshop, I will probably need a volunteer to allow me to perform the calibration on his projector (sorry no TV). I'm looking to propose this calibration workshop to Sammy of Sound Decisions to allow us to his demo showroom next door to hold this calibration workshop. I have yet to ask him. Of course, it is perfectly understandable if Sammy rejected it for obvious reason - running a business here. Anyhow everything is at planning stage now so nothing is firm up as far as I am concerned and exploring other means/platform. The recent declaration by WHO on the coronavirus threat to be at a pandemic level makes this workshop a "no-go" as social-distancing is important and also the most socially-responsible way for all Singaporeans during this trying period. Thus this workshop if ever materilaized, is not going to happen any time soon. But I am looking at the last quarter of this year. Meanwhile, I will like to gather some feedback as to what you want to know as well as to guage the interest level from members here. If it is only a couple of members who expressed their interest then I will probably call it off...Well anything can happen, watch out for further updates. ;)
Boxerfan88 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I’m interested [emoji1672] I don’t have a projector now, but it is in my plan to migrate to a projector setup in the not too distant future. Topics that interest me: a) calibration tools & techniques (i have limited experience with ColorMunki ) b) calibration target BT709/DCI-P3? i suppose BT2020 is impossible today because projector cannot cover BT2020 color gamut yet. c) understand how the source material color space is mapped to the projector color space? petetherock Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Like... need to learn more... thumbs up Do we need a temperature scanner haha
kingajit Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Dear Desray, Thanks for starting this thread. Most of us buy expensive panels/projectors but have never even seen a calibrated projector/TV in a dark room. Until one experiences the magic of a calibrated set it will be difficult for them to appreciate. Over the years I have collected some amateur gadgets for calibration but have never been able to go beyond the basic steps of doing a calibration using a spectrometer. It seems quite overwhelming without guidance. It will be helpful if you could start with the basics of calibration using S&M disk and how to setup the spectrometer and the laptop. Please count me in for volunteer or demo session you may have. Thanks. Ajit
HDTV_noobie Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Hands-up for interest. Though just sold my projector but would like to learn more on how to actually do it and A-B comparison between before and after effect.
MatJenin Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I "kee chiu" to join when the workshop is scheduled.
InnocentBlood Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I would love to join in as well :) I'd like to know what tools we need to even get started on the calibration journey.
ronildoq Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 Definitely a very good initiative, will help many people, I’ll be keen to understand how everyone is handling HDR calibration for projectors Lotsa content on HDR these days it’s almost inevitable I’ll also be keen to understand further on tone mapping for PJ and how we look at what makes a pj with good tone mapping capabilities. So far one way that I know of is using the spears & munsil disk. Would like to attend if you will be hosting the workshop anytime in the future, so I can get a better grip and understanding about the various patterns used Count me in for HDR calibration.
chaozhoi Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 I am interested. But I have limited hardware. Basic entry projector and AVR.. I dun mind a basic calibration workshop covering basic calibration techniques only.
sanhas Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 I'll be interested to attend. True that we bought expensive projector but never get to utilize its full capabilities as it is not calibrated. A big thank you if you can help me on this.
whitesox Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 I don't think I will be uncomfortable and bored. It is a very good topic, therefore, I want to learn how to calibrate my SONY PJ. Having an idea to use SD's demo showroom for this workshop is a great choice. I am one of his customers so surely other customers will be pleased too. When will be your schedule? really a big thank you
kopidilo Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 Wow this is so good... ! Video calibration is not an easy topic to teach I feel (after going thru crash course last 2 years lol), and probably take longer time and more effort than an Audyssey workshop. Salute Desray for the self sacrificial attitude and taking time to do this. Will u be using Chromapure for this Desray?
desray Posted March 19, 2020 Author Posted March 19, 2020 Will u be using Chromapure for this Desray? Yes. Chromapure. It is the easiest to use and learn imo.
kopidilo Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Yes. Chromapure. It is the easiest to use and learn imo. Nice... The current version of Chromapure has auto pattern generator and auto measuring for some functions. Can help save a lot of time for a workshop (at least it did for me). Life saver.
