Tonight while watching Transformers The Last Knight, my optical HDMI cable suddenly (without any kind of warning)...just died on me. There is literally NO SIGNAL at all. I did not bend and left it there since Mar last year (when I first bought it). Frankly, I didn't expect it to kaput in exactly 1 year!!! Now I'm starting to have doubts about the longevity of these optical HDMI cable.

Anyone has any encounter with optical HDMI cable die "so young" at a tender age of 1 yr old?  ::) ::) ::)

FWIW, this is the one which I bought from a local shop, though mine is 10m.

Any chance if tested on TV(troubleshooting on other devices) if it's the same ? Quite shocking it died just like that. Thanks for sharing on this desray

There has to be a converter that converts HDMI signal to optical and then optical to HDMI signal at the display end?

Should be the converter issue. Either the source or display side has issue. Or maybe both ends.

Most probably is the chip inside kaput, 9/10 times. Not sure if u can swap out the chip, otherwise 10m of cable wasted . Most of them are factory terminated with machine

Last year I tested one no brand from China , it was pretty hot, had all the markings of “pass” “compliant” etc, tested it for 1/2hr, the connectors were hot, then I stopped. It was a 20m version

Could be kaput due to Long hours playback and heat? Have u ever noticed if the connectors were hot in the past?

Anyway, perfect excuse to upgrade to hdmi 2.1 !

looking at the picture. There is no brand. particular it's OEM???, hence quality is questionable.

so far the Fibbr brand i had all still ok. should have kept a 15m long cable and not sell it away.

It is not the cable but the active circuitry inside - can be damaged by electrical surges

I suspected so.

I also using Fibbr. So far no issue. I believed frequent on/off the AVR which I connect my admin might be the trigger for the active circuitry to short over time. So guys be careful.

Good news, despite 1 year, the shop honour their word when they told me 1 yr shop warranty. And true enough, they will get a replacement for me when the next stock arrives in 2 weeks time.

Back to normal copper HDMI cable for now.

Confirmed up lorry. Returned back to shop for 1 to 1 replacement.

That's good to hear about the 1 to 1 replacement.

Don't expect fiber optical hdmi cable to be more durable than normal copper based HDMI. Careful when concealing your cable in wall. It will degrade if unprotected from any kind of external shielding.

Most shop won't do warranty as I walked the floors of SLT today to ask about other brands and reason for failure. They also suspected short circuit due to possible electric "spike" like sudden surge from power returning after a power failure and constant on/off of AVR.

Constant on/off is one of the factors for the failure but no choice. My HDMI cables also started to have issues after a year or so. I always change them after a year but I am just using 1.5m Daiyo brand cables and they are reasonably priced since the length are relatively short.

my normal 15m copper cable has been here for more than 14 years already, no issue at all. 3D, 4K, whatever, all work fine.

why ppl use fiber ?  it's by and large plastic, and needs an active circuit to convert.  just that conversion chip can fail due to heat or static. what's wrong with simple passive copper cable ??

running longer distance w/o fear of signal degradation - e.g. > 20m or so.

eh if your copper HDMI is 14years old. cannot use liao. every few years HDMI standard changes, bandwidth fps rates 4K UHD all the HDCP compliance makes us upgrade HDMI cable every few years.

unless you mean copper HDMI cables have been around for 14 yrs. no need change to fiber then that's a different story.

all the monoprice active copper HDMI cables i got 5years ago cannot work for current 4K standard.

Wah Lau, ....one failure only means must doubt the longevity of optical HDMI cable meh?

I have 5 long-length Fiber HDMI (>10M) and all working 100% with no re-syncing issues.  They are working so well that I even change all my short length HDMI to all optical Fiber HDMI.

All working fine.

I started in Jul 2018 using celerity Technologies.  I bought two 18.2M (60foot)

I won't recommend this because it was first generation and it need a 5VDC supply from a USB jack.

This is what I used and is recommended.  I don't know this company and I bought my first length from the Taipei Audio show in 2018 just on impulse because WIM bought one.  Such a joy to use, just plug and forget.

Subsequently, I bought another 2 more, the last one being the one DJQ was trying to get rid of....I bought it as a spare length and used it for quick connections and for Multichannel playback using Roon Rock NUC.

This is the 2 long length Cables connected to my Sony projector.

One long length is connect directly to Oppo 205 Video output.  The other short length Fibbr for Audio HDMI goes to the AVP.

The other long length goes to AVP HDMI output.  The other Wireworld purple HDMI is for Zone 2 output for my wireless headphones.

I also got another short length from Zidoo Video player to the AVP.

I have no issues with all my optical HDMI.

Hey!  I just bought a Denon AVC-X8500H last week and I will be moving everything to the new receiver soon.

Glad to hear that. I truly hope that your cable continue to last. I have 2 fibre optic hdmi cables. One have issue and the other one still working fine. The one working fine is Fibbr (more branded). The one that “up the lorry” is an OEM brand.

One very important note is that when using active HDMI, there is also a very high possibility it may “fry” the hdmi board, if the chip used is of Low quality

One such known brand to me is Monoprice redmere HDMI. The problem is not the quality of transmission in data, but rather the quality of the chips used. A few of the AVR hdmi boards got “fried” from the redmere. Hopefully they have fixed the issues. But I still saw complaints From consumers as early as last year.

So when assessing the hdmi cable, other than quality of video and sound, do keep a lookout from consumer feedbacks on the built in chips. Those play a huge role.

I’m using another brand called “ moshou” from China. So far so good tested on 12k Dynamic HDR material, smooth sailing. , price and quality not bad. Haven’t had or heard any negative feedback on this brand

The best length to go with is 2m, whenever possible. Even if it means u only need 1m. There are various reasons 2m the way to go, handshake issues etc

The one we are seeing now are those that uses transmitter that has equalisation algorithms built in to the transmitter and receiver. It’s designed to counter signal degradation, sort of like a signal booster.  So the assumption is that how much degradation in signal quality over length? The answer is 2m

On the projector, at least on the BenQ 5700, there is an option for hdmi equaliser ( professional settings). This works as a signal booster as well for longer hdmi runs

On the Denon, it’s good to do a microprocessor reset, this reset clears/discharge all static built up through th hdmi boards over time.

Do a back up of all settings, microprocessor reset to clear the static charge, then restore that settings back into the Denon
