Laptop video card setting VS external TV display calibration

Recommended Posts

Bros who calibrate your displays....

Need some help and advice. The source I am calibrating is my Oppo BD 203 Player, which I use to play my movies via USB HDDs or Bluray discs. I don't use my laptop to play any movies nor gaming.

So I'm using my laptop's HDMI video output to connect to my OPPO BD Player HDMI IN. The Oppo BD player 's HDMI OUT is then connected to my LG OLED TV.

I'm using Chromapure software, which is loaded onto my laptop. I'm also using Chromapure's inbuilt signal/pattern generator. So Chromapure software displays patterns/ signal via HDMI from my laptop to the OPPO player, then to my OLED TV.

As i was reading on the RGB range (FULL and LIMITED) on displays/ video devices, it suddenly occurred to me that on my laptop's NVIDIA video card, there is this setting for the video card too.

The advice i need is whether I should:

1) select 'WITH THE VIDEO PLAYER SETTINGS' (default), or;

2) select 'WITH THE NVIDIA SETTINGS'

before I calibrate the TV using Chromapure and my laptop.

Screenshots below for easier understanding. Thanks in adv! :)

Change the Input levels to 0-255 as you are using a laptop/PC. Most test patterns will include this Full range depending on the source (e.g. bluray player or HTPC/laptop). It may get rid of the red tint that you experience on the Contrast pattern.

thanks desray.

Sorry, i realised i forgot to mention an impt info. I'm calibrating the video path that is from my Oppo BD player to the TV. I use the Oppo BD to play media files via HDD or BD. So it's not for playing media from my laptop.

I've amended my original post to indicate edits in BLUE color.

In this case, do i still need to change the input levels to 0-255?

No wonder, I find your question abit odd but then again I thought you REALLY meant to say that you are going to play media files from a laptop/htpc source which is not uncommon to begin with hence I did not probe further.

Another part of me, actually wanted to tell you that there is no need to be concerned with the laptop video input level since you are using the built in chromapure pattern generator which already accounted for the variances but no harm if you want to play around with the setting from video (limited) level to (enhanced) PC level just to see if you can reduce the incidence of the red tint appearing on your contrast test pattern. Furthermore, if there is any significant impact to the end result of the calibration, I bet Tom Huffman would have mentioned in his website regarding the need to check and ensure video input levels set to either 16-235 or 0-255 before commencing the calibration. Last I recalled, I don’t see any such instruction, I could be wrong so better check.

In short, you can just leave it intact if I were you.

You should calibrate your screen using your Oppo 203 vide it’s usb inputs or disc playback, there is no need to adjust for full, high black levels setting on the OLED. Stick to Low black levels setting 16-235 on your OLED and calibrate your screen using the Oppo instead as your playback of HDR material will be vide Oppo and not the laptop.

Video settings on the laptop is irrelevant here, as the laptop is not part of the chain in your UHD / Blu-ray Disc playback
