Muchoman1 Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Hey guys, looking to expand my current bookshelves with a subwoofer, and where is the fun in JUST buying something? I was wondering what the best Subwoofer driver+ subwoofer amp would be for around $500? Seen the very nice sub built by Leon here and looking to build something similar (although probably slightly lower end driver/amp) Will update thread if/when this comes to buildtime Thanks
Sub Sonic Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 (edited) You could try the Peerless XLS 10" driver and matching passive radiator in a 25-30 litre enclosure, with the PR massed to around 600 grams, if you could find a PR for sale (I could be wrong but I think they have been discontinued). These make a very nice combination. There are plenty of sub plate amps out there but be aware that most of them have built in bass boost, so long as it is around 25hz you should be OK. sweefu Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 The 10" XLS and XXLS drivers and PR's are still available in Aus
Muchoman1 Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 10" XLS and drivers PR's are still available in Aus Saw the subs but couldnt find the pr anywhere Can you provide a link THanks
Muchoman1 Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 http://www.essentialaudio.com.au/contents/en-us/p741_Peerless_830452_Subwoofer.html http://www.essentialaudio.com.au/contents/en-us/p968_Scan_Speak_30W-00-00-0_Discovery_Passive_Radiator.html Would those two go together fine? Thats the 10" Peerless XLS sub, with a 12" Scanspeak passive radiator Or would going up to the 12" Peerless match better?
sweefu Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 WES Components in Sydney have the 10" PA, as well as all the XLS series. Might be a few dollars cheaper, too. AFAIK Essential Audio would buy from WES, in my experience all their prices are a few dollars more than the WES price I get.

Unable to access the WES product range directly, but can get onto their retail one, but cant find those subs/radiators Able to do some direct linking? EDIT: found the XLS 10" sub in car components section, but havent found the passive radiator yet EDIT EDIT: Found both, apparently the search function is there for a reason Edited January 8, 2013 by Muchoman1
Sub Sonic Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 Here's a useful link in regards to the XLS 10: http://www.tymphany.com/files/resources/appnotes/Appnote_xlssub.pdf Hope this helps! SS
Paul Spencer Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 If you are building a small sub with the XLS series, say 30 - 40L then you can't do a port so you have to use the PRs, which are relatively expensive. If you make the box big enough to allow some extension with PRs, say 60 - 80L with a 12", the box becomes big enough for ported to work. So the bang for buck options are 12" small sealed or a larger ported.
Muchoman1 Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 Space certainly isn't an issue, can fit a very large sub if required
Muchoman1 Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 Horn sub :-)SS Haha, probably not going to happen Ill look into a single 12" sub in a larger box, as i have a lot of space to house it How big an enclosure (and port size) would be best for the peerless XXLS 12" sub to get some nice real low end response (as close to 20Hz as possible)?
SBL Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Eminence Lab 12, 145L, Ported and tuned to 22hz with a 500w plate amp for good measure. You won't be dissapointed Thing to watch with the xxls 12 is it's impendance drops below 4ohms and most plate amps wont be happy. Ofcourse you could get around this with 2 of them wired in series
Guest atilsley Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Try 12 inch SB Acoustic driver with O-audio 300 watt BASH amp. Within budget.
Guest atilsley Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Just finished two small tapped horns using tang band drivers and one 300 watt o-audio amp. Does the trick, stunning depth for small packages. about the size of a standard computer tower. http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/41989-new-three-way-horn-project/page-5#entry816886 Check volvotreter web site for plans. Have also built the taller 30hz model with same driver. If in Sydney, feel free to listen. Andrew Check

henry218 Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 for music and relatively low spl listening, prob sealed is the best choice. i tried the horn from andrew, it got more spl than i would ever needed for music. its good for movies though
Muchoman1 Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 I have checked out the O-Audio site, apparently they just closed up shop or something? I agree that the O-Audio amp seems to be the go, if i can just find one
SteveLuck Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I bought a pair of hypex sub DS2 170 watt amps and 10 inch seas drivers. Only the delivery of matching passive radiators is holding things up now. I liked this sub project very much: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/140224-seas-l26roy-subwoofer-finished-pics.html
Hifiplus Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Ive got a pair of response 10" sub drivers (new in box) for sale if interested.
Muchoman1 Posted February 20, 2013 Author Posted February 20, 2013 (edited) I have now sourced my amp Crown CDi 1000 http://www.crownaudio.com/cdi-series.html Apparently can throw out 1400w bridged into 4 Ohms Since i now have a fair amount more power to play with, a multi-driver system seems to be the go. Looking at 2+ 12" subs in a single box now. Since i have the space, a larger sealed box would do better than ported no? Edited February 20, 2013 by Muchoman1
