Value for money PC server?

Who's willing to take the plunge.

That's the 64 thousand dollar question! ;)

And that doesn't cover the 'silent system upgrade'....

I quoted on a dual Xeon system last year.

I think it was about 9 grand with 64GB of RAM.

(not refrigerated though)

Why do they insist on calling it a Super Computer, It's a dual Xeon system, that doesn't equate to such a thing

I guess the average joe won't know better and believe it *sighs*

Edit: I think they have stolen Steve Jobs marketing strategy, and it worked for him and his *cough* Super Computer *cough* :P

True...........it's just a run of the mill server in a fridge.

What was that in Atomic?

Year 2000? Issue 6 or something?

You have a good memory for an old fart :)

I didn't remember till you mentioned it!

Yeah, damn right I remember them, butt ugly alright.

I wonder how they stack up performance wise these days....

Oh! I used one of those Thermaltake Extreme liquid coolers on a build last week, surprisingly easy install and works well cooling a i7 3770.

Edit:You used one in your own build, didn't you?

Doh!

I grabbed this thinking that you had a good experience http://www.thermaltake.com.au/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001876

Ah, works really well anyhow.

Edit: Oh, It's internal too, if you have room that is, mates Cosmos accommodated it nicely up top in place of the two stock fans.

That's heaps cheaper than mine!

What I meant was, mine puts the heat back inside the case when you mount it in the front 5.25 CD Drive slots.

(That's fine in my full tower)

It can be mounted where the PSU is and expel out the bottom of the case which I was contemplating.............just need to figure the best place for the PSU then.

Huh!

This one was about $155, the other single fan ones, were $125 & $98.

The PSU, what is your case again?

Edit: BTW, I ran into a strange issue with that build last week, the PSU was a Corsair 750w job, and for some reason they didn't want to play (PSU & Mobo), constant shut downs straight after start up, couldn't even get windows installed.

The Corsair was powering a Xeon 3110, 4gb DDR2, 2x 1tb HDD's and a HD 3570 x2 for years, then it doesn't want to power an i7 with 8gb DDR3 running off the Intel graphics with a SSD.

Grabbed an 650w Earthwatts, and all good!

I should do more testing with that PSU, hate to throw out one like that unless it is definitely dead. Could have just been a coincidence, and was It's time. Hmm..i should test the other bits and move them on.
