Soundscape Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 My mate and his family moved back from Forsett last year. Bloody glad they did. I'll have to see if they know anyone affected, pretty sure they would

Saxon Hall Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 (edited) LOL on Tassie having bush fires, really ? When I was a kid there were terrible bushfires in Tasmania where 62 people died.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_Tasmanian_fires My heart goes out to our friends in Tassie over the current crisis. unclemack Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 LOL on Tassie having bush fires, really ? Two things wrong here. There's nothing to laugh about regarding these fires and, unless you are a 16 year old girl...LOL? Really?
kunalraiker Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Two things wrong here. There's nothing to laugh about regarding these fires and, unless you are a 16 year old girl...LOL? Really? Trying to loosen up the mood a little, but in all seriousness-didn't expect Tassie to have bushfires, its something we on the mainland are prone to. Its bl**dy cold there all the time.

emesbee Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 LOL on Tassie having bush fires, really ? Its no joke. I can remember there were some awful bushfires in Tasmania many years ago. 1
mondie Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Good to see you are all safe Jesco. Its amazing how quickly Australia has gone from enjoying some of the best rains for decades to back into a dry spell and horrific bushfires Anybody heard from Andrew Ward? 1
colinm1 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 the fires of 1966 was real bad too,in tazzy, we have another 5 days of plus 40 here to look forward to! 1

Its amazing how quickly Australia has gone from enjoying some of the best rains for decades to back into a dry spell and horrific bushfires Anybody heard from Andrew Ward? Only some parts of Australia have had those rains. SA, as usual, has largely missed out, and its as dry as tinder here. It was 45C here in Adelaide last Friday. Luckily we were spared any major fires, but there is still another week of high temperatures ahead, so the threat is not over. Its awful to see the destruction in Tassie, hope all our Tasmanian friends are ok. 1
mondie Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 True mate, I should have been clearer as I was referring to the rains we enjoyed in 2011 when we had El Nina, I understand Oz has since swung hard back into El Nino
Rural Rat Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Best wishes to all affected. This time of year is always concerning. This particular fire season we have had a couple of firebugs active in our area. The police try there best to track these d...heads but there is only so much we can all do. 1

Lots of undergrowth, all nice and tinder dry by now. Conditions are ripe for a disaster....look out. Disclaimer.....lived in SA for 40 years.

My Dad caught a bloke on his property last year (at Belair) with a can of petrol in his hand. When challenged he claimed his car had run out of petrol !!! Mind you he was coming from a direction where the nearest road was an hours walk away and heading to where there were no roads anyway !!! Police were called but the guy disappeared PDQ.

Our council also sent out a letter prohibiting residents from slashing any undergrowth on the road verges. As the council dont do it anywhere near enough I promptly shredded the letter and cleared our patch anyway. 1
Jesco Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 the fires of 1966 was real bad too,in tazzy,we have another 5 days of plus 40 here to look forward to! Yeah, we too are in for a few more hot days, albeit not around 40°... I hope! Stay cool.

As the council dont do it anywhere near enough I promptly shredded the letter and cleared our patch anyway. Our council have said they will no longer do any slashing here, they're broke and can't afford it. Will be interesting to see what repercussions for the councils in the areas where the fires really hit on Friday.
wolster Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 Oh dear. It seems that fears are now held for many listed as missing in these fires.
THOMO Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 (edited) I was in Tassie last year and was horrified by the condition of most of the small land holdings. It seemed to me that much of the farm land had been sold off for "lifestyle blocks' and the lifestyle seems to be about growing as many weeds as possible. The gorse, blackberry and bracken has been allowed to choke up the hillsides and that is a fire disaster waiting to happen. My friends settled in Cygnet and set about clearing their 50 acres of such weeds to get it back to productive farmland only to be admonished by greeny neighbours for daring to use herbicides to get rid of these declared weeds. The same friends just escaped being burnt out in Dwellingup WA a couple of years before so had very different sensibilities about such things. Edited January 6, 2013 by THOMO 2
comfortablynumb Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Councils......an exercise in non-logic and frustration !!! Parents property is semi-rural. Have an issue with foxes eating the chooks and geese, even in broad daylight. Council says not allowed to shoot them, too dangerous in semi-rural. Fair enough. Council says not allowed to lay poison baits . Stray dogs might eat the poison. Huh ? Council says only option is to trap and remove said fox !!! Foxes are clever buggers....have a guess how many foxes have been sucsessfully trapped ? 1
