Bronal Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) A work colleague wants to use his Apple desktop computer to stream music wirelessly to a speaker (or speakers) that he wants to move around, including outside. I have NO idea what equipment he needs to do this Could anyone help with what he needs to buy and any recommended brands? Many thanks! Edited January 2, 2013 by bronal
proftournesol Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 He needs an Apple Airport Express, a small wireless base-station that will take him 2 minutes to setup. It has a minijack in it for sound output or alternatively he can use the USB port to plug in a DAC. The easiest option is to add an AE to something like Audioengine A5s, the AE can plug directly into the back of the speakers and they are powered, all he'll have to move around is the 2 speaker boxes (1 with the AE plugged into the back) and have 1 power cord. It is possible to use non-Apple products but this is the simplest solution. 1
mrdave Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) Airport Express is a good idea, however the USB port is only for printing so a USB DAC is a no-go. The Airport Express would need powered speakers as The Prof suggests, or an amp to power passives - not so portable. With the advent of AirPlay, (A way to play music from iTunes or other apps on the Mac/iPhone/iPad on multiple speakers or AirPlay-enabled devices over a wireless network) there may be some more practical/aesthetically pleasing options. http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&tbo=d&q=apple+wireless+speakers+airplay The B&W Zeppelin and friends, Bang and Olufson's Beoplay stuff and umpteen things from Phillips and Logitech should all do the trick.
