RME Fireface 400 and WDTV live

Featured Replies

I could just as easily post this under DACs (and maybe even vinyl), but it relates to streaming as well.

For some time now I have had an RME Fireface 400 hooked up to a Mac Mini as an addition to the vinyl/CD based 2ch system and have been using it very successfully for digitising vinyl then playback from the Mac using iTunes and (now) Audirvana 1.4. Really excellent bit of kit, semi-pro, heaps of capability, analog and digital inputs and outputs.

I also have a simple 2-bay NAS on the main PC which is available via the home network and have been accessing some media (mainly video) in the HT system using a WDTV Live. I just replaced this with the SMP version, so I put the old WDTV in the 2ch system and have been mucking around with more video streaming. Was thinking about difficulties with an audio connection as the main pre (ME25) has no digital inputs, however have now connected the optical out to the Fireface (its got heaps of inputs and capability which I have not used yet) and with a bit of adjustment of the mixing software, now have music off the NAS in the 2ch system via the WDTV and Fireface.

It's all a bit of fun at present as there are more ways of doing the same thing (eg Mini/iTunes/Audirvana accessing the NAS). Just want to see what works best before investing in a multiple-bay NAS next year. Meanwhile more fun to be had over the Xmas break!!
