rotur Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 As the title suggests, I'm now a bit torn as to which way to set up a server. Or can I have both? Would be keen to hear what the pros/cons one system would have over another. Haven't purchased the Audiophilleo or a server at this stage as I'm not sure which way to go. It will be for FLAC files, mainly Classical/Jazz/World Music
rotur Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 What's the second option serving? Same process
Lil Caesar Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 (edited) ...either way the AP2 will improve USB performance. I'd suggest that a mac mini for audio streaming is effectively a dedicated server in all but name Unless your dedicated server has hdd redundancy, connectivity to multiple clients via ethernet and wifi and auto-backup it's little more than a pc anyway. That's what I was hoping people would say as I suspected as much...will go the AP2
DoggieHowser Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Same process Again, serve what?? I understand the first option: Mini running A+ with USB out to Audiophileo to DAC What's the second option?

Eternaloptimist Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 I have what I think you are proposing: I have a MacMini 2011 with USB out into Audiophilleo2 to a Wyred-4-Sound DAC2. The files are stored on a Synology NAS via wired connection to the Macmini. I have 2 copies of all music (ALAC and FLAC) which are on a mapped drive to which the software players are pointed (rather than having the NAS act as a DLNA server). This works really, really well. The Audiophilleo2 has been a fantastic upgrade. It seems to "level the playing field" and minimise the difference between software players in my system. Good luck!

Exactly my plan...any difference between wired/wireless?
DoggieHowser Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 I find that with wireless, the gapless plays are not as seamless.
Eternaloptimist Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Bingo! Exactly my plan...any difference between wired/wireless? Depends on how the player is set up. Where tracks are completely loaded into memory, e.g. JPLAY and large files, there is more of a delay over wireless than over my gigabit network. Otherwise negligible real life difference here. The Audiophilleo2 has, I think, has removed much of this as it reclocks the bitstream just prior to the DAC.
