danter Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Item: Sansui AU-517 Location: Sydney Price: $750 Item Condition: Excellent - full restoration - Functionally 9.5/10, Cosmetically - 8.5/10 Reason for selling: Funds to upgrade main system (and it is way too nice to use just as background music in the office) Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Sale fell through. A small issue was discovered with the phono stage where there was a slight noise across one cahnel until it warmed up (when it then disappears). Was arranging to have rectified (a transistor on a slow decline - may take years), when the amp the buyer was replacing came back to life. So now available again. This is a superb example of the Sansui AU-517 with full dual mono desgin. 65 wpc into 8ohms. This has had the full overhaul by John here (Skippy124) including a full recap, replacement of electros on the amp driver boards, power supply board, tone control board and equaliser board, replacement of all fuse resistors and fitting new bias pots, plus clean/detail and function check. Here is the thread on SNA detailing the work... http://www.stereo.ne...l__+sansui +517 There is also a thread on this amp on Audiokarma... audiokarma thread Full specs here ... http://www.hifiengin...ui/au-517.shtml In addition to the superb restoration on this unit, it features both the sort after factory rack handles and rear rubber 'bumpers' (to protect the rear connectors). Not often you will find a unit with both accessories. Pictures: Attached Thumbnails
RockandorRoll Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Was all due to buy this, paid up and everything. Then the NAD magically came back to full life. Something with the protection circuit kicking in. Left it powered for a few days and it worked so i really had no need for the Sansui Danter was awesome to deal with the whole way through so should be an easy decision for the new buyer, shouldn't have any problems moving this on. 1
pete_mac Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 This would make an awesome Christmas present for some lucky SNA'er out there. Ho ho ho!!
Phantom Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 Hmmmm. Timing. Thought this had gone and went and bought another amp for the no.2 system but I am happy anyway. These are the real deal and anyone looking for some vintage that sounds as good as it looks, you cannot go wrong here. If there are astute buyers around this shouldn't last long.

The NAD should still under under warranty shoot me a message if you have any future problems with it.
Phantom Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 (edited) if this amp is still for sale ,then it shouldn't be and it is heaps better than a NAD any day of the week Edited December 28, 2012 by Phantom
RockandorRoll Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Agreed, tonnes better than the NAD but I have 2 amps I'm not using currently and now the NAD is working that would make it 3. Too many amps
Phantom Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Fair enough R&oR. I wasn't actually having a go at you mate, just a nudge along for the OP
ol55 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Hi,Danter How would the AU-517 handle a move to Brisbane? I am looking for a companion for a rega rp3 from (SANTA) Regards ol55
danter Posted December 31, 2012 Author Posted December 31, 2012 I'm sure with some serious packagin that this could be accomodated. Would gestimate about $35 - $40 plus packaging if I cant scrounge up the required size. I just dropped the 517 back into John this morning to have the fading transistor replaced. So should be all good to go shortly.
danter Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 Not as yet. I have it back now with the fading transistor replaced so she is now 100% and good to go. Lovely amp - have had it in the system over the past week and these dual monos are really very very good.
