betty boop Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) wow looks like cambridge has come through with a beauty here, http://www.carltonau...=node/view/1772 $2699 and look at the max consumption 1800 w ! and genuinely rated at 120w x7 wiht the max power consumption indicating the level of headroom. definitely I would say this a better bet than buying a cheaper AVR and cheaper amp combination. why would you bother. check out the innards, one gutsy power supply meaty capacitors and a cooling tunnel down the guts of it to keep it cool running. Wilco Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 (edited) Sweet mother in heaven! I was in cav week before xmas and i ask Brett when these babies wld be in store. He told me they were shipping as we spoke, but didn't really believe him cuz thats what ppl kept saying 2 mths ago. Guess he was kidding around! And Al, that power consumption rating plays true to it's word. Why wld one bother with the others (maybe with exception of marantz) when u can get a beast for the same price? Just don't get it. Ppl have mentioned to stick with the big 4 as they had more mainstream ce components, so i purchased a 650R for cheaps for my 2nd room, and my word...it's been used like peanuts, in hot climate, on every single day, and the hdmi board functions as designed. Also, my prior volume standard with the marantz for the room was -25, now with the ca 650R i can't go any higher than -45... Brilliant, this thing oozes out power, so I'd imagine this 751R wld blow the competition away........ Edited December 29, 2012 by Wilco
Wilco Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Also, i don't know how this could be compared to Denon, Onkyo and yamaha. The prior 650R was a unit that gave buyers the ability to combine their 2.0 stereo setup and ht setup in the same pair of speakers, in the one room. i had to really concentrate to tell the difference between the 650R and my destinys (maybe i had to much ear wax that night....)
betty boop Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 the japanese contenders just dont have anything remotely similar in the power department I dont think. you have to look at outboard power amps for anything of the ilk. I would say rather than the cheapo amps and avr combinations people sometimes go for this probably a better one box solution. and yeah given the cambridge audio prowess 2ch wise dare say be quite enough for a lot of people 2ch wise. can imagine these being pretty popular
SPOONMAN Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 So much positivity; are thinking of pairing with my Jbl ls 60s and new smart tv and outdoor speakers. Thoughts
betty boop Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 hard to say not speakers had any experince with it comment. they look like low efficiency, but anyways from avr side of things this is probably one of the grunty avrs to check out. other would be the nad 777 which at $300 more is quite the brute as well ! http://nadelectronics.com/products/av-receivers/T-777-A/V-Surround-Sound-Receiver
Wilco Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 So much positivity; are thinking of pairing with my Jbl ls 60s and new smart tv and outdoor speakers. Thoughts These will positively kill ure ls60s. Ive got the 650Rs paired up with my jbl e80s and b&w 602s, and they give these 2 speakers more than enough room to spread it's legs. The 650Rs are 1400w max power consumption, and imo there's just too much of it (which damn be a gr8 thing) so the 751R will be plenty. I dare say try the 651R instead?
Phantom Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Cambridge is definitely on a roll with all of the new "51" series models. The CDP and 2 channel amp are superb for the money also
L J T Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 The power supply looks impressive! One reason I went for the budget AVR and outboard power amps, was to future proof my investment. HDMI and 4K will only be good for how many years? Does the Cambridge offer an upgrade path? I like the idea of a one box solution for processing and amplification, but not if its obsolete in 12-18 months. 1
peacewise Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Define obsolete L J T. Cause the manufacturer, advertiser and distributor probably reckon 12 months. Spend more, right? Does it do 4k, do we need that (yet)? When avr ain't using RCA and hdmi, then it'll be obsolete, IMO, till then it looks like a worthy piece of tech.

When avr ain't using RCA and hdmi, then it'll be obsolete, IMO, till then it looks like a worthy piece of tech. I wonder how long will it actually take for us to use 4k feature in these avrs. Honestly With everyone still selling 60 and 70 inch tvs at only 1080p? Cmon. Only an unreasonable person with too much money will be using 4k. Having this feature in sub 1.5k avrs is an absolute joke imo. What? we're gonna buy this 1.5k amp to future proof for 4k? Yea right...by the tine wee actually use it software wld have changed and better 4k scalers wld have been released. Why bother.
peacewise Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Totally agree Wilco. Goes further too... in that early adopters of (whatever tech) 4k will do much of the crowd sourced update/patch/refinement AND pay top dollar for the privilege of a less-than-perfect product... it's an old sore point of mine. 1.5k avr technologically matches that über 4k 85 inch screen @$16k we saw in a sna thread a few weeks ago? Doesn't match my audio $'s per video $'s. Fair enough might match anothers, but who?

That's around the time I think new formats will be available. I would like to have one of these if I could afford one. I guess many people like to own the newest technology today. I guess it's an unrealistic expectation on my behalf that this will only be current for the next 12 months or so. The software could be written to allow for future expansion. That would be great for CA if it can.
peacewise Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Wait two years L J T, it'll be $900 then! I quite like being two years behind the latest, gives me time to glean a more informed opinion and hunt for what I perceive as bargains. 2
Wilco Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 hey peacewise do you already have the 751R? or is that the cdp or integrated in your siggie?

I like the idea of a one box solution for processing and amplification, but not if its obsolete in 12-18 months. we dont even have a 4K disc format let alone 4K displays that do the format a justice. keep in mind to resolve 4K you need to be 1-1.5x screen heights to see the benefit. ie imax and larger scale. How many are going to have that in the home now ? are you in 12 - 18 months ? my flagship denon processor is 5 years old and still very much current. if I was worried about the next best thing around the corner I would never have purchased it using your logic and missed out the last 5 years of enjoyment. plenty will buy a decent avr or processer and enjoy them for what they are ..... now
peacewise Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 hey peacewise do you already have the 751R? or is that the cdp or integrated in your siggie? G'day. No 751R. In sig is the bluray 751BD and the 650R a 7.1 avr.
