Anyone have experience ordering from dontpayretail?

Those are some very tempting prices. Shipping no doubt will be steep(Perth for me) once they get the weight calculator working correctly. But even so I cant see a local store coming even close to those numbers. So I guess it comes down to warranty support, as long as I can still get an extended warranty through sony I would be happy.

This is the cheapest I've seen yet

http://www.tescobox.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi...Projection%20TV

and that works out at A$2943.33 wow :D

cheers laurie

Errrm Laurie, they are in Hungary, UK, Japan and Spain unless you know something I dont. Are these prices compareable in any useful sense? ie you have to be prepared to ship / pay customs + duty and forego warranty.

Or am i missing something here?

Shipping to Oz ?

Smaller market so economies of scale are not as good as europe, asia or USA ?

Think abou it - Of course australia will be more expensive.

Japan has an 80m population - Austrlia has 20m.

How many people in the US or Europe.

On this forum people keep on comparing Aussi prices to OS prices, which is absurd.

In other countries economies of scale kick in.

This is just one reason, but there are many more.

Thats what they like you to believe.

There are products sold in aus that are cheaper than they are in all other parts of the world which seems to negate the whole economies of scale argument.

Different model AFAIK.

I thought I saw here somewhere that the Aussie version is an XBR2 based set, whereas the A2000s are older technology.

Cheers,

BAC

I think you may be wrong[it's not to say I'm right either] the model number that the above link is:

KDS-60A2000 ours is:

KDS-60R2000 so the only difference is the letter before the 2000 so I assume the 2000 number could be the model, letter could be country, the rest is identical

The Euro-Australian SXRD’s have little in common with the US models, which are manufactured in the US for the US market.

Our models will have the DRC 2.5 video processing that will be used in the yet to be released US only XBR 2, but as for the rest of the set, who knows how much they will have in common.

Yeah exactly, computer components are generally much cheaper here than in Europe, not really sure why cos i believe the economies of scale argument. Only thing i can think of is that for components manufactured in East Asia, theres a hell of a lot more distance and time involved in shipping to Europe than there is in shipping to Australia.

...doesnt explain those prices linked though.

Consider the logistics costs.

You can probably fit 5 times as many Plasma/LCD into a Cargo Container as these enormous RPTV's, maybe even more.

Now shipping a cargo container isn't cheap.

That's part of what you're paying for.

As someone else mentioned, the US models are assembled in the US.

Way would you care what happens in the UK? :D

It seemed you where inferring we would get the same as them, thats why I commented. :P

Point of interest only Owen like most here go over to the AVS Forum in the States for information

Those look very much like SD figures to me. I'd imagine you could sit quite a bit closer for HD material. My viewing distance is 8-10ft and I'm looking to go for 60".

Recommended THX viewing distance for a 60" screen is 6.7 feet.

The human eye can fully resolve 1920x1080 on a 60" screen at up to about 7.8 feet.
