Kaynin Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Hey folks, I'm having a lot of trouble with my AVR set-up, and am finally at my wits end... THE PROBLEM - I can't get my audio streams (PLII music/movie, Neo 6 music/movie, EARS, Enhanced Stereo, Stereo & Pro Logic) option up and running when watching DVD/Blu rays. THE SET-UP IN QUESTION - PS3, NAD T787, Pana THP55GT30A all via HDMI. (I have a second set-up which will be relevant later - PS3, Denon 3313, Pana THP65ST30A all via HDMI). WHAT WORKS - The connection between the TV and the NAD works fine because I get full audio stream options when watching TV. The whole Denon set-up described above works 100% when using all forms of TV & PS3 functions. Now, this is the interesting one - I have WMA music files stored on an external hard drive which I play via the PS3 into the NAD. I get all audio streams available and working when playing these files. I also get all audio streams when the blu ray start-up and menu is on, but when the movie is playing, I can only get audio stream options of stereo downmix or direct. WHAT IS HAPPENING - When the PS3 is set in Linear PCM audio mode, and a movie is playing, the PS3 options display reads "DTS-HD MA 7.1 48Khz", and I can only chose downmix or direct audio streams. When the PS3 is set in Bitstream audio mode, and a movie is playing, the PS3 options display reads "Multi-Channel DTS-HD MA 48Khz", and again I can only chose downmix or direct. WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR - confirmed the Denon set-up works 100%, then swapped the HDMI cables over and tested. - full factory reset on the NAD and attached PS3 (yes, the PS3 reset took about 8 hours!). - changed the HDMI inputs in the NAD to 3 different ones. - mirrored the options set-ups in both PS3 systems. - tested about 10 DVD's and blu rays, also a few the same ones on the Denon as well. All without luck...so I'm hoping you folks can help...any and all advice greatly appreciated...
Kaynin Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 (edited) G'day Telecine, thanks for the quick reply. The more input here the more likely I'll get this problem solved. I just checked the HDMI set-up on the NAD, which is set as follows: 1. Ethernet/CEC in standby: Off HDMI Control (CEC) 2. Power Off: Off 3. Source Switch: On 4. Audio System: On 5. ARC mode: Auto I've changed the ARC mode from Off to Auto to Source Set-up. I've changed the Audio System from on and off. I've also gone into the Input settings for the source set-up and have the played with audio and video options. All to no avail. What I don't undertsand is that I get all audio streams when listening to music via the PS3 (external HD), and also on the stat-up sequence and menus in DVD and blu ray playback - but just not during the movie itself. As soon as the movie starts, the problem occurs. Edited December 20, 2012 by Kaynin
DoggieHowser Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Is this a fat or slim or slimmer PS3? I recall with the fat one, it doesn't output bitstream HD audio. So I had to set it to multichannel PCM. In that mode, it outputs multichannel all the time. So even when I send it 2.0, it will output the 2.0 but embedded in the MPCM stream. So in your case, that's probably 7.1 but the remaining 5.1 channels are "blank". The receiver thinks it's getting 7.1 so it can't put a DPLIIx processing on it. The only way to get what you want is to manually change the audio output on the PS3 to 2.0 only when playing music. That way the receiver sees only 2.0 and can apply the DPL processing. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing.
Kaynin Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 They're both 2nd generation PS3's, so the slim model. I might try the A/V set-up again and look closer at the output options. Doggie may be right in the PS3 is outputting something that is preventing the AVR from processing.
Kaynin Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 Hey Doggie, you've hit the nail right on the head mate. I went through the audio set-up again and reduced everything to Linear 2, and low and behold, the audio streams work on the AVR! So, you were spot on the money. I've been struggling with this for about a week, so I can't thank you enough! I'm going to re-figure the AV set-up as best I can, but I was wondering what the best setting should be. The options for the PS3 outputs are Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS 5.1, Dts-HD High Res as well as Master Audio, Linear PCM in 2, 5.1 and 7.1 formats. My next question - is it best to have all of the above enabled on the PS3 and just select Stereo Downmix and Direct on the AVR, or disable as much as is necessary on the PS3 (likely to only be Linear 2 channel available when all is said and donw), and have the AVR do all the processing? My concern is, if the PS3 only outputs in Linear 2, will the sound quality be adversely effected where the AVR just won't be able to do it any justice? Also, I have a choice for Bitstream and Linear PCM output on the PS3 menu. What's your opinion on which is best for movies? Once again, a thousands thanks.
