Jventer Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 (edited) Yes we had a GTG. Alice Springs has only about 25,000 people - not many here - so we had a mini GTG with 2 systems. My equipment as per my signature. Member Funky brought some of his stuff to my place. He says he is a WA member but that is because he lives there. He actually works for an organisation in Alice Springs and he had his equipment here. Funky is the proud owner of a pair of Evolution Acoustics MMMicro speakers. He has done a review on these in the post relating to these speakers. I have also posted there. Beautiful speakers. He also brought a DK Design Vs.1 Reference Mk3 hybrid amp and very nice power cables and interconnects. We had about 4 hours to play around. We use my Audio Aero as a source for CD's and then listened to my amps and speakers, his amps and speakers and then my amps and his speakers and his amp and my speakers. It was the first time I listened to somebody else's system in my house, having previously only compared my own stuff. It was very interesting and enjoyable. How did it sound? The MMMicro's were at a bit of disadvantage as we only had them on chairs, we did not have time to build their stands. However: I was really impressed with their sound. Their bass was very good for a speaker that size. Comparing to my speakers the main difference was the capacity to fill my room. (At least 5 x 10 with an open end on one side.) I really enjoyed these speakers. And am in love with their looks. The Vectuer amp is more powerful than my power amps. The main difference was the sound - I could hear the difference between the full valves and the hybrid. I liked its sound. The best thing was to meet a SNA member and to learn about other equipment and to hear different music. The last time I listened to Fleetwood Mac was in the mid eighties. Funky brought a Cd and it was a revelation on how good it sounds on a nice system. I have never really listened to Neil Young. Funky brought an Album called the Harvest. I liked that a lot. Thanks Funky - it was really good. Edited November 20, 2012 by Jventer
funky Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 It was an evening of enthralling music with engaging company. Yeah being able to compare different aspects of each system in the flesh (not over a static review on the net) is fantastic. Seeing how others journey in hifi are progressing is also fascinating. I had never heard all tubes before and wow! I get it, they have a smoothness to them that can be captivating. Those Osborn's my, my what a sound. They project such a volume of music, they really are something special. I am starting to get a sense of difference between good floor-standers and bookshelfs, no matter how good, in their capacity to move air and give that real sense of 'feeling' the music. Impressive. I am definitely looking forward to another GTG. Next time maybe we could try the dark side... Thanks Jventer.
