Chowbotak
There has been a lot of talk about statins being more harmful than good. What is your verdict?
Hardlok
Doctors have been brainwashed by big pharma to prescribe statins the moment they see even slight cholesterol elevations. While statins do help to achieve lower cholesterol levels, the benefits are not clear at all. Anecdotally, overwhelming cases have shown that heart attack risks and even strokes are higher in statin users. So ironic! Statins deplete the body of the vital coenzyme CoQ10, (which affects heart health) and some users of last resort have started supplementing on this to counteract some of the major side effects of statin therapy. Whatever the individual response to statin therapy, users should be monitored for adverse and slow-onset side effects by their doc. Patients can consider trying natural remedies such as diet control and supplementation to slowly obviate the necessity to continue on statins. This is the safest approach that improves their health while reducing unknown pharmacological implications.
n3wk1d
I was once told by the doctor to take statins bcuz my cholesterol seems on the high side, and he did informed me that once you are on it you can't take it off. As they are just controlling and would come back if you stop consuming them. Afraid of being too rely on drugs, I decided to refusing the prescription and control my diet and went jogging instead. After a year or two, I did a medical checkup again with full blood count and I was told my cholesterol level are healthy. Well, I guess it very much depends on your own diet and what's your cholesterol level is now. If it's still not too bad, I suggest stay away. dsj88
Doctors make most of their money from prescribing drugs. It is utterly obscene how much they make from it from simple panadol to cough mixture. And expensive drugs like Nexium. I pay A$36 for 28 tablets here. When in Singapore I had to pay $150. Doctors prescribing is a conflict of interest as they push non generic brands as they earn more from it. Also alot of what they prescribe are bonuses from pharmas so their cost is low. Here is Australia you have to go to a qualified chemist to get your prescription and it by law they have to ask you whether you would like a generic. I am on a boderline case but my family GP says to go on a diet and exercise regime and come back in 6 months to see if it works rather than prescribing statin immediately as they have no vested interest in giving you the drug. Not usre in Singapore as they lose income if they don't prescribe Hence the moral dilemma. CBT go exercise first and then see it works out before starting on statin
wizardofoz
bkk drugs are a lot cheaper...even in oz too i ran out of some of my meds and got replacements here at 60-75% of the sg cost. when i go to bkk i will check the current lot of meds I am on and see if they are more affordable there too. TheMachinist
There are 2 sources of cholestrol: internally generated by liver and diet. I cycle myself on statin every few months. At same time take CQ10 and fish oil to boost HDL. The statin helps to keep LDL levels under check.
Chowbotak
Thanks for all the input. I have stopped taking statins for some weeks now. I exercise quite regularly and eat more fruits and vege than meat. Green tea and brocolli juice is my drink of choice at home. I have the same opinion about the pharma industry. Have witnessed pharma salesmen visiting docs in a govt hospital. Don't look right to me. Any docs here have any comments? U guys who posted so far, are u in the medical field? TheMachinist
Self motivated to take care of own health is best. But at the same time trying to be own doctor is no good. Also good idea to monitor levels every few months by health checkup. The checkup preferably should do on same clinic/hospital as each equipment the calibration may vary. Epicure2
Good or no good, you have to do your own judgement. Every promoter will say their brand is the best. Do your own research and make your own decision. BTW, some fish oil are very expensive and it is best to wait for special promotion especially at Guardian or Unity. Recently some Omega 3 are contaminated and recall by authority.

Epicure2
Please don't be your own doctor. If your LDL is above borderline high, you should follow your family doctor advice. https://www.nuh.com.sg/umc/patients-and-visitors/diseases-and-conditions/others/high-cholesterol-and-lipid.html

wizardofoz
The art of eating less..... Is to eat till you are not hungry and not till you are full. The trick is to eat until you feel about 75% full then stop and let your hunger catch up with with what you have eaten for about 20 mins...then you will probably find you are no longer that hungry to stuff more down.
