What do you guys think of Peavey guitars. I'm thinking of getting my son something to learn on and I can get peavey a bit cheap.

Is reasonable guitar for the right price, but if he sticks with it he'll soon want something better. Then you will wind up paying twice.

Go for something like a Fender or Gibson if he doesn't stick with it you'll get your a reasonable price for it.If you buy the right Fender/Gibson you may make some money at very least you will get what you paid for it.

As Batty reminded me on the weekend I have a couple of these around the place......

I bought this in the early '90s to replace a stolen Ibanez Blazer. I tried pretty well everything in my price range at the time <$1200 and settled on this Yamaha RGX612A. Very underrated IMO. As agro as it looks it can play some very nice subtle tunes too. Just wish I was still up to it :( .

My lovely wife used to play this with me back in the early '80s. We used to follow a Sydney band called The Numbers (Anyone remember them?) and thought we could do something similar. Since then proper jobs, mortgages and kids have taken a bit of a priority. It may nearly be time to revisit those dreams.

..and this one belongs to one of my sons and it rocks. Epiphone Les Paul. Bang for buck these days is sensational I reckon.

Apologies for the pics I will try for some proper ones when I get time if interested.

It's on my watch list now..........I think it will go for a lot more than that.

You never know LP, it may go for a song just after Chrissie not much spare cash around, but if takes off $1000 to $1200 should pull it up.

I'm a massive fan of vintage Jap stuff, lawsuit era and otherwise.  I recently had a massive downsize in the collection, but here's some vintage Jap guitars I own/have owned.

Guitars I've moved on...

Beautiful Alvarez copy of a Gibson J200

Late '80s Fernandez J-bass copy

post-113061-0-29117500-1357984187_thumb.

Late '70s Greco SE 400 strat copy.  Yes it says Fender on the headstock.  The previous owner had "Fenderized" it and decreased its value in the process

Early '80s Yamaha "Studio Lord"...jeez Yamaha had some weird names!  Basically a Black LP with gold hardware

Yamaha BX1 headless bass.  Very strange feel, look and sound.  Had it about a week before moving it on!

Here are the ones I still have and will never part with unless I'm destitute and living on cat food.

Yamaha "Super Flighter 500"...again with the Yamaha names!  Such a versatile guitar.  24 fret (but 24 3/4" scale, which means the upper fret spacings are very small...lucky I have skinny fingers).  Seymour Duncan bucker, coil tap and phase reverse switches and the usual Gibsonish controls.  Handles all my Gibson requirements

post-113061-0-68511200-1357984512_thumb.

Aria Crown Professional bass.  Best guess is '64-'67.  Amazing and rare beast.  Single coils the size of cigarette packets, a weird Fender shaped headstock that's also angled back and a unique and wonderful tone.  I've only seen another one once...ever, despite many wasted hours on Google.  The guy from Deep Sea Arcade has one and I nearly fell off my chair when I saw their clip for "Seen No Right" on Rage.  I promptly got in contact with him and he was amazed as I was to see another one!

My favorite guitar I've ever owned...'78 Tokai Silver Star strat.  Absolutely kills every Fender I ever had.  And it cost $400.  Ash body, perfect neck and 'board profile and a sound that is very "dark" for a single coil guitar.  The bridge pup has a nice stratty "quack" to it but the middle pup is where the magic is.  Rich, grunty and full of harmonics.  I love this guitar!

Hope you enjoyed the trip down Japanese memory lane...

Cheers
