hugo_wilco Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Just wanted to know I anyone in Victoria has these amplifiers. I am very interested in hearing and buying these amps but don't want to fly to Sydney. I spoke to Elson the amp maker and he said he has sold a few to Victoria. Anyone out there with one??????
MrRogers Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 If you do come to Sydney you can have a listen to the Cymer Audio Southern Star Preamplifier. 1

Herbyj Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Mr Rogers Can you tell us a bit about the preamp? I didn't even know Cymer made a preamp, I thought that they only made power amps.
MrRogers Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Elson is a very talented designer and maker of amplifiers. I was amazed to see an amplifier at his workshop, returned for servicing, that he made in 1976! He has made many preamplifiers, mostly for those who've also purchased power amplifier. The Cymer preamplifier is an all mono design. It uses separate transformers for the left and right channels, for the line stage. The same also for the phono stage. It is a two housing unit, the power supply being completly separated. The power supply alone weights over 10kg! It is all point to point wiring. 1
hugo_wilco Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 Well just left Elson's house after listening to the 13E1 amps. Wow. What a great amp and a great guy. I now see why people have been going crazy for these Amps. It's great to speak to someone as passionate as I am about "music"' not HiFi. This amp is a great example of well thought out and executed design. Forget SET vs PP or feedback vs no feedback debates. It all depends on how, where and why you implement these philosophies. This amp is NOT a SET amp, but rather a single-ended Tetrode running in triode mode. It sounds exactly like SET!!! It is not a Push-pull amp as the 13E1 is in SE; yet has all the drive and dynamics of a great PP amp. It sounds push pull!!! It is inky black and quiet with truck loads of micro details and low level transparency; but has Feedback! Beautifully natural and organic sounding, yet no valve rectification! This is a great example of designing an amplifier with your ears as well as your tests results. Elson has created an amp based solely on what makes it work best as a whole. There is a long waiting list and I now know why. 2

I just received a pair of the new (first in OZ) Rethms and they are very convincing. Regards Av1 I'm not sure how to provide a pic... Edited December 20, 2012 by av1
