Not sure if this info has been posted yet but anyway... I was wandering around the net (...as you do) and I stumbled on a reference to the Oppo BDP-93 being no longer available. I bounced around a bit more looking for more info, and it seems this is verified by going on the Oppo website..(BDP-93 Sold out)...OPPO BDP-93 Blu-ray Disc Player ..Oppo's twitter feed (August 1)..OPPO Digital (OPPODIGITAL) on Twitter ..also mentions a new model coming along later in the year...

Apparently the BDP-95 will also be replaced in the new year adding some kind of 4K video capability as well.

According to the info I've been able to gather (Sept 11 Twitter Feed), the new models will be designated the BDP-103 & BDP-105.

Yeah, I heard that too QD, but are there any 4K Video material or displays yet? It seems quite in it's infancy, it will be interesting to see if it takes off.

I did read that the BDP-105 will have USB/coax/toslink inputs to utilise the DAC segment for computer/cdp/tv etc, which I will be very interested in. I'm hoping for one unit that acts as video disc player, decent cdp, and for computer as well. Will wait and see how it turns out.

Not having made the upgrade to the 95 from my 83SE, I wonder what these new models might offer. I see no fan for one... The digital inputs might come in handy to run the STB through the Oppo and bypass the SSP.

My understanding is that the new players will:

  1. be 1½ times the height but the same depth
  2. have headphone amp/jack
  3. have two digital inputs
  4. have 4K support
  5. have HDMI in
  6. automation support for computerised AV/lighting/security environments

There is no guarantee that the firmware will support the Oppo being driven from your PC, but they are currently working on that. Any enhancements of this type will also be in firmware upgrades to the Oppo 93/95 units! So this is specifically NOT an advantage over the existing models.

Cheers

There's some early pictures of the unit over at the "Head Fi" website...they have three digital inputs, Coax, Optical & USB. Yep..no guarantee that the firmware will support input from computer but I'm hoping they'll make it possible.

The ability to use the BDP-105 as a standalone DAC is a great feature ...Computer-wise it be brilliant to be able to send a (Stereo or Multi-Channel) digital signal from a computer to the multichannel analog outputs on the 105..You could just about build all your digital music media playback needs around it without needing any other outboard unit at all, and it be just about the only affordable multichannel DAC out there...a major selling point.

...hopefully they won't bugger it up.

As a video player the 103/105 may not be an upgrade. Both will be subject to new Bluray rules that mean no analogue video outputs and will have Cinavia copy protection. Unless you have some 4K content?

Great news - I will be looking for a second hand, region modded player as I suspect that there will be many that love to upgrade simply because they can.

Yeah. Very sucky.

interesting that the 'player' will have two HDMI inputs, as well as its USB 2.0 connections and eSata and network (cat 5/6) inputs. Not sure what analogue inputs are available (havn't looked for that).

Plus (of course) the two HDMI outputs etc etc. And 7.1 analogue audio outputs.

It really does start to become some sort of pre-amp, and becomes more realistic to add an amplifier rather than a receiver depending on what you are trying to achieve.

I will be sticking with my 93 though - does everything I want at this time.

the 103 is now up on Oppo's site

http://www.oppodigit...lu-ray-bdp-103/

been reading and curious re the twin inputs ability, probably a good option for maybe simple systems where player could act as dac and rudimentary pre amp as well ? interesting, but yeah will stick with my cambridge 751 I think :)

but good to see the developments none the less. good oppo not just sitting on their hands but continuously developing.

I think? the only differences between this and the BDP-95 are the fact that it can play 4K source material and convert 2D to 3D. Also a Headphone out? Can't recall if the BDP-95 has headphone out on it?

Most new TV's can do the conversion nowadays so not too sure how useful that feature is? But the 4K resolution capbility seems to be a bonus. Probably the only thing i would really like in my BDP-95.

a lot more more differences than that compared to the 95. the XLRs are the right way around and no noisy fan anymore. the eject button is illuminated. plus display is a lot larger than the tiny one they had before. apparently its a lot less sluggish in use than the 95 used to be. it can also be used as a dac and rudimentary pre amp this time around as well :)

What Oppo needs to do is improve on their horrible remotes first before anything else.

What do you find wrong with it? I'm quite happy with mine and I've had far worse.

they can learn a thing or two from marantz/denon/cambridge in the case department I reckon. the display is still a tiny thing and awkward on the left with no player buttons. cambridge/denon/marantz have a nice size display below the tray and have player buttons (play, pause. stop, track forward / back) as an audio player does :)

the cambridge remote is better, but unlike the oppo not illuminated, that I do like about the oppo.

not that either remote gets used as I use a harmony universal instead :)

I find it rather unresponsive compared to my other remotes. Sometimes it takes several goes before the player gets the command. And the reaction is also rather slow, the delay is like a second or two esp on turn on and off.

thats more the sluggish nature of the 93/95 that used to drive me up the wall ! dont find this with the cambridge alternative and apparently oppo have much improved on this with the 103/105 :)
