Does anyone know which is the best CD edition of B*tches Brew?

I have the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces 2 CD set. I think its an early 90s remaster and it sounds really crappy—quite an achievement to make such wild and trippy music sound so flat and lacking in dynamism and drive.

It was re-released as a 3 CD set in 2010 by Columbia Legacy—does anyone know if its significantly better?

I'm sure its brilliant on vinyl, but no turntable, alas.

I have that one too and I agree. It sounds like arse. I find the hammond organ to sound overly distorted, but I'm not sure how much that has to do with the mastering. I am interested in upgrading too.

Haven't listened to it for a while and it struck me how lousy it sounds, like itis playing in another room.

I assumed it was an early analogue to cd remaster problem, but i might be wrong. A lot of those early cd transfers were horrible. I'll check out the newer version i think.

I have the Miles Davis boxset with all the Columbia albums from a couple of years back, and IIRC the BB disc is pretty darn good. Can't remember what master they used though. Prior to buying the boxset I had a Columbia Legacy 2 disc set that was also very good, but I sold it when I rid myself of most of my cd's.

And yes, the vinyl is very good.

(NO CD EXPERIENCE)

The original concert was seen/heard at one the the great concert halls in Canada--Massey Hall, Toronto. The music was so new that to this day I'm still not sure how much I enjoyed it. Some was great, some seemed really repetitive!

I feel the same way about the original vinyl.

Listening to that album on a poor copy/version can really ruin the experience, more so than earlier classics such as A kind of Blue.

Just sounds flat and one dimensional
