Here is mine. Grew up in a Renault household and other cars. Renault, VW, Merc, Holden. So just had to have one. There were 3 of us with these -- brilliant car in its day. Drove it from Sydney to Adelaide. No problems went like the clappers... R16 TS

I do have a pic of the actual car -- I'll dig it out and post...

myself was a red 1972 Datsun 180B SSS coupe

lovely engine that reved happily to 7000rpm, macferson struts and independant rear suspension, extractors and twin SU carbies. compared to a lot of cars of its vintage was well ahead of its time. and for me as a uni student was best bit of fun I could afford !

My mum bought mine for me, cost her a whopping NZ$250, I installed $2500 worth of stereo soon after. Datsun 1200 in yellow, wicked power to weight ratio, lots of fun. My second Datsun was a 1200 coupe then 3rd Datsun a 180B SSS much like Al's.

Pic stolen via Google:

Edit: I do in fact have a pic of the SSS!

It was similar to this, but a 1.6 litre model in white and a lot worse condition. It was brought over from New Zealand by my parents when we moved here and was a hand-me-down. You couldn't actually buy that particular model in Australia, but it was the number 1 selling car in New Zealand that year.

The doors did not unlock from the outside, so you had to climb in the boot. But the boot didn't work properly after I reversed it into the trolley bays at Bi-Lo the first day I owned it, so when you went over a bump it would open up. But that was OK because the hydraulic springs which make it close slowly were broken so the boot would slam shut again quickly. However, it would also slam shut on your head quite painfully as you were climbing into it.

A 1960 (or was it 1961?) Vauxhall Victor. This is not the actual car, but it is the same model (mine was two tone blue).

I know I had a black and white photo of it somewhere. Will post it if I can find it.

1973 VJ Valiant 245-hemi straight six.

Auto 3-spd (IIRC) column shift. White duco with brown vinyl bench seats (handy) front and back. 20mpg country driving. My older bro called it a spaghetti jet.

Something like this: but white ...and less rust ...and smoke

Great little 850cc Mini. No originals but it was Red but had the stock wheels not mags.

I'm 6ft 2 & most people thought I was mad driving a mini, but because of the way the steering wheel sits and the fact that the clutch only needs about 2 inch of depression, there was tons more room in this that any other small car. :)

Hah! Reminds me of one of mate's first cars. He had Mini panel van, fitted with twin SUs. His mum thought it would be a nice little first car, that would not get him into trouble. Of course, he regularly drove it as fast as 'Oil light'. This was the point on the speedo where the dial ran out of numbers. The cops only caught him, because he slowed down to 35mph. He never knew they were trying to catch him.

1972 Holden Kingswood Station Wagon, with a 186 motor that leaked oil everywhere you park! It belong to my dad and I inherent it when he bought a new Corona. It was a rust bucket as well and you didnt care where you parked it! I use to park it with attitude and noone will go near it!

Mine was an FC Holden Special Staion Sedan (waggon). Cost me $250.00 and the previous owner was stunned as I showed him how to double-shuffle back to first gear (no syncro on first in those days). A mighty 50-odd kW propelled my FC to 100kph in less than 22 seconds! Which was just as well, when the master brake cylinder failed once.

Here's some photos of a similar vehicle:

1965 Mini Deluxe. 1000cc, and no synchro on 1st gear. Always made for interesting steep hill action when you had to come to a stop before changing to first.

I'll never forget the interior smell. The mix of vinyl, raw fuel, and aging rubber is something you just can't replicate. Ahhhh, memories. Such a raw driving experience. I'd love to get another one as a Sunday driver one day.....

Funny story, I mutilated this car by installing a 15" sub in the boot. For shaaaaaame! Luckily the person who bought it from me was going to restore it.

I had a Mini Clubman Panel Van as my 2nd car. It was lime green, but the Dulux paint plate in the engine bay said "Hairy Lime Green". Nice :)

The first car that I owned (as opposed to my parents' cars that I drove) was an Escort Panel Van, burnt orange, 1.3 litre engine, drainage holes (ie rust) in the floor well beneath the drivers seat, no heater, had a half-window on each side and a purple lunar mural on the other half-panel.

Had the small pioneer tape-deck installed at Tonkin's, which was really handy as it acted as a block to the driver's window being pulled down (the window winder handle would jam on the tape-deck). It was a pretty bassy sound from the tape-deck, with dual cone speakers - not 2-way, but dual-cone!

I think the interior was a mix of wood panelling, steel, yellow cotton curtains and some sort of light brown/golden velour floor covering.

The handling of the car really improved when I replaced the normal ply tyres with radials. The chrome-sprayed wheels nearly looked like mags, but the Ford side-decals made the car look a lot faster! It was a fun handling car with a very light tail - the rear would certainly shift quite quickly!

I think I moved to a brand-new 2-door Honda Accord in late 1980 within 20 months.

No photo's, just memories.

HT Holden Monaro 186S Crimson with a cream vinyl roof and 8" Mags.

Lowered with big arches and racing pins in the bonnet. The wheels still touched the arches on full lock.

Wouldnt drive one now If I was paid to but I thought the sun shone from its exhaust back then.

Looked a little like this but classier.

My 4th or 5th car was a old but in good nic Peugeot 504, auto, French Blue exterior with cream velour seats tres elegant :love .

Built like a brick what-know-what, heavy body, thick well-hinged doors, i believe it had a nickname "French Volvo". Best point was the suspension which gave a "magic carpet ride" ...if you didn't notice or ignored a speed hump no problem ...sail straight over with fantastic suspension compliance and little disturbance to the occupants. The auto couldn't be bossed around, plant your lead sandal and it would give you v for victory and take as long as *it* needed to accelerate ...never drove the manual version which no doubt was better in that regard. Fond memories.

..Fantastic stuff. Keep 'em coming..Looks like the venerable Mini is winning in the first car stakes so far..Great cars, except in an extended wet spell. Electrics not brilliant.

Mate of mine had a "hotted" Cooper S. man it was fast. And he was a bit of a nutter driving it too. He had a head-on down the south coast..near seven mile beach one night. And my brother was in the car. They were lucky, I was not impressed.

The 180B SSS - Yes drove that too. Great car. Nice motor gearbox and handling. Was quick. Used to thrash it through the Royal National Park, then down the coast rd to the Gong...I'm waiting to see the car I learnt to drive in -- The GREAT Datsun 1600...
