Spearmint Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 There doesn't appear to be a thread based on general photography chit chat, so here is one where any new cameras, bodies, lenses and accessories (or anything else) can be discussed So to start off... Nikon D600 Announced - Available from September 18th http://mynikonlife.c...lr-cameras/d600 Nikon's entry level FF body 24.3 Megapixels Not that I'm looking for any more toys at the moment

Jake Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Stop this immediately! We spend enough money already! What about old cameras? I took many a photo with one of these back in the day.
Guest JohnA Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Not that I'm looking for any more toys at the moment you keep telling yourself mate, but you aint fooling us
Milo Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Stop this immediately! We spend enough money already! What about old cameras? I took many a photo with one of these back in the day. Don't you just love the older metal bodied traditional SLR look?? Well I do! 1
Spearmint Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 you keep telling yourself mate, but you aint fooling us Well its sort of working... NOT Don't you just love the older metal bodied traditional SLR look?? Well I do! I do as well, and it was one of the reasons the Olympus OM-D E-M5 appealed to me (not that I ended up buying one), particularly the black and silver model.
betty boop Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 hehe like the look of the olympus as well. as with the fuji's though have my DSLR, like the idea of a second camera when travelling a bit lighter, have my lumix lx5 but think can do better and can be easily tempted !
Spearmint Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 I'm the same Al, I want to check out the Panasonic FZ200, although its rather large. The Sony DSC RX100 was originally on my radar until I found out the equivalent focal length went from 28-100mm. I'd prefer something down to 24mm. The Panasonic gets to 25mm, so is getting closer.
betty boop Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) hmm didnt know that, pity about the 28mm on the sony, like you, would prefer 24mm on the wide end. the lumix slr style compacts have always been nice things. another thats interested me is the new canon eos m incredibly compact for its crop sensor it packs, and would take my canon lenses as a bonus with adapter, but lacks a bit of sense of charecter. anyways sometime next year when funds permit will check it out Edited September 13, 2012 by :) al
Spearmint Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 I see Tamron have refreshed a couple of lenses http://www.adorama.com/alc/0013892/news/Tamron-70-200mm-f28and-Tamron-90mm-Macro-Lenses-Re-launched-and-Refreshed The previous Tamron 90mm Macro is a cracker, looking forward to feedback on these two lenses.
Leon Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 The Olympus is very nice, highly recommended, I am selling off some of my Canon gear because I like it too much! Now how about the new Sony RX1 with full frame sensor you can almost put in your pocket?
Spearmint Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) I feel the sensor in the Sony RX1 is the same as in the Nikon D600, and at around $3k not exactly cheap IMO. EDIT: Interesting move Leon, downsizing to the Olympus, and one that makes alot of sense IMO, particularly when you're travelling or just having a camera with you. Leon Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Hey Minty, I'm not likely to leave the "large" cameras fully yet, but the smaller size does make a lot of sense, plus I have way too many Canon lenses that I don't use enough. And some of the new lenses coming out are very interesting, such as the new Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 which is basically a 24-70 f/2.8 at 1/3 the size and weight of a Canikon version.
Spearmint Posted September 13, 2012 Author Posted September 13, 2012 By all accounts a nice lens, albeit in the similar price bracket to the 24-70 f/2.8 Canikon (I like that word)
ehtcom Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Hi Minty. Nice thread. I'm toying with the idea of changing to FF. Well, the gear will mostly be used by the missus, but I like to take the odd shot Sports, Landscape and Portraiture are her main interests, in that order. It will mean replacing my DX lenses though :/ We currently have Nikon D300 and D100 (old clunker) ** 12-24mm f/4 DX ** 17-55mm f/2.8 Dx ** 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 ** 80-200mm f/2.8 ** 300mm AF-S f/2.8 (I love this lens) 2x Teleconverter (not Nikon) SB-800 flash. SB-400 flash. Would most likely sell off the gear with the ** and purchase the dream kit below.... Nikon D800 50mm f/1.4 85mm f/1.8 14-24mm f/2.8 24-70mm f/2.8 70-200mm f/2.8 (Have heard the 80-200mm may be sharper??) Nikon 1.7x Teleconverter Any suggestions are most welcome. This won't happen overnight, but it will happen, maybe in ~18 months Cheers, Earle.
Catostylus Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 On the other hand I'm teetering on the brink of getting an OM-D EM-5 to supplement my E-30. The only thing holding me back is the rumour of a "professional" body Micro Four Thirds body which could potentially be all things to all men (and jellyfish).

Like your good self I keep tethering on buying something only to read some rumour or two which puts the doubt back into the purchase
Super Mustud Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Catty, I have an old Olympus Trip that should be just the thing for you.
Spearmint Posted September 14, 2012 Author Posted September 14, 2012 Hi Earle, Depending on the price of the D600, this could make a nice introduction to FF. From what I can gather it will be around the 2,100USD on release with drops expected after the initial purchase frenzy wains (if there is one). If you're seriously considering going to FF, you can to either change over a couple of your lenses now, or keep using your current lenses with the FF body (Most current bodies work okay with DX lenses, I believe the D600 will be 10MP). You should also be able to pick up a used D700 or D3 for a good price if you don’t mind going down the second hand route. To help keep your costs for new lenses down you could also go for slower ones e.g. 16-35 f/4.0 and 24-120 f/4.0, both of which produce, IMO, stellar images, plus have the advantage of VR. They’re also lighter than their f/2.8 counterparts. BTW a few of us are heading up to the Dandenong’s this Sunday, so if you and your wife would like to joins us you’d be most welcome. PS I’m trying to level up the Canon/Nikon ratio (J/K) Hi Minty. Nice thread. I'm toying with the idea of changing to FF. Catostylus Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Catty, I have an old Olympus Trip that should be just the thing for you. Does it come with mustard jars?
Super Mustud Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Does it come with mustard jars? You ask too much. Want me to send you some?
Catostylus Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 No, no, though you are exceedingly kind. I'll get by. I have enough old Vegemite jars to tide me over.

The only thing holding me back is the rumour of a "professional" body Micro Four Thirds body which could potentially be all things to all men (and jellyfish). Personally I think the EM-5 is pretty professional already! Weatherproof, hotshoe, full manual, 9 fps, video, exposure comp all easy to access via dials.. Not sure what they would do, though i am sure they will think of something! I wouldn't wait, just get it now. By all accounts a nice lens, albeit in the similar price bracket to the 24-70 f/2.8 Canikon (I like that word) Nowhere near the cost, the new 24-70mm f2.8 MKII Canon is around $2.5k (I've listed my used MKI version for around $1700- or so), the Panny is about US$1250- but likely to come down over time, though I think they are charging a premium for it because they can. Canikon sounds better than Nikanon!

Canikon sounds better than Nikanon! I had a feeling the Panasonic was going to be around $1600AU with the Nikon around $2000AU. I didn't realise the Canon was that price. You do have a way with words...
