venerator Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) Just bought a turntable setup and decided to put it in my room instead of the living room, so I need to get some new speakers to go with it. I am on a fairly tight budget at this stage, and am seriously thinking about getting these speakers which can be had for about 170: http://www.microlab....smallclassid=72 I actually already own a pair of the bookshelf size version of these (Solo 6Cs) and they sound great (Although I am only using them as computer speakers). I also like the look of them, and they seem to be getting fantastic reviews online in terms of being hi-fi quality. I also like the idea of not having to match them with an amp (which is apparently quite important) as they are active. I was wondering what the more experienced users here thought of this option? I would be willing to spend roughly 200 on speakers and 100 on an amp as an alternative, but after searching through ebay and such I didn't really find any speakers which are considered decent in that price range. This was as close as I came: http://www.gumtree.c...s-2-/1006291427 http://www.gumtree.c...sic-/1006063969 The only hesitation I have with getting the solo 7Cs is that not having an amp means if I ever want to upgrade I will have to basically start from scratch. My current set-up is as follows: Toshiba SR-Q630 TT (Audio Technica AT90 cart / stylus) Technolink TC-760LC preamp The speakers will also plug into my computer which is running a Xonar DG sound card but I will probably upgrade it at some point soon. I would also like to plug them into my Plasma (It only has optical audio out but I could buy a cheap converter for the Solo 7Cs if I went with them). So basically wondering what the best option would be? I know the budget makes it difficult (uni student) but can't really decide if I should just go with the 7Cs or wait around for an amp/speaker combo which might be a better match? EDIT: Could probably get bookshelf speakers instead of floorstanding if I had to, although the way my room is set up they will probably have to sit on the floor. Bus_Boy Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) You don't want book shelf speakers on the floor period, you want them around ear level. Why can't you use speaker stands? If you can accomadate floor standers, then a set of standmounts shoudln't be an issue. A good set of active studio monitors would be my choice. Start with something good, and work your way up around it. You could add a dac later on to improve the sound from the computer. Edited September 12, 2012 by Bus_Boy
txbenje Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 After months of listening to a vast array of speakers. I eventually pulled the trigger on a pair of Electra 1008 BE in slate gray. They are stunningly beautiful both in sound and looks.
