Warren M. Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 (edited) The next ASoN meeting will include a double-blind shoot-out between a stock Oppo BDP-95 pitted against my JLTi Oppo 95, fully modified by Joe Rasmussen of Custom Analogue Audio. For the double-blind test, each Oppo will have its own hard drive, pre-loaded with the same CD-quality tracks, SACD-quality tracks, and FLAC and WAV files. The amplification equipment will be my JLTi KT-88 Mk2 integrated valve amp, which has Tung-Sol KT-120s, Psvane 12AT7_Ts and Sophia 6SN7s in place of the stock tubes. The JLTi amplifier is a reworking of the Yaqin 100B push-pull amplifier, which takes advantage of the good basic design and excellent build quality of the Yaqin amp, into which Joe Rasmussen has back-filled technologies, circuits and techniques that he uses in $10K+ amplifiers, which overcome the limitations of typical Chinese amplifiers, providing a detailed, emotive and powerful amp at an extraordinarily modest price. The speakers will be Joe Rasmussen's co-developed prototype Orpheus Maximus speakers. These don't look much like the production version of the Orpheus Maximus will look like (they are prototypes), but they are built to the same audio design and specification. Pricing and availability of these speakers is not yet published, but hearsay suggests a price in the $10K region. They sound more expensive than that to my ears. The JLTi Oppo 95 enhancements include a Surface Acoustic Wave 125MHz resonator in place of the normal "BAW" crystal clocking mechanism, a specially modified Vacuum State Electronics "Terra Firma" master clock controlling the two clocks within the Oppo 95, elimination of op amps from the output stage, and vastly more besides. Details of the actual test regime will be published before or soon after the meeting. Edited September 17, 2012 by warrenmmmmm

Catostylus Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Was that for me? They look alot like the Elsinores. Yes. Sorry, should have quoted.
Krispy Audio Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 I'm interested to hear how the comparison went between the two Oppos, was hoping to make this one.
kramered Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 It was an interesting blind comparison. Member Morris Swift has collated results and will be writing the usual comprehensive report. When ready, I can send a copy of the report to those who are interested. This coming meeting on Sunday the 4th of November will be a cracker too with the new products from iFi (AMR subsidiary) and an Avant Garde speaker. Visitors welcome. Cheers, EK
eagle Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 (edited) I'd love to hear the comparison as well. Really interested in hearing how different the modified version was over the stock model. Wish we had something like this in W.A. Edited October 25, 2012 by eagle
