KiZ Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Hey all Another misspent Friday night with too many beers and nothing to watch forced me to rearrange the lounge room around my new TV. I previously had a projector, which limited my options for lounge layout, but now a 55" Samsung LED has freed me to do what I wish... Never noticed how much black I had, think I need a wooden cabinet to break it all up! P.S, does anyone have any advice for centre speaker arrangement, back in the CRT days, you could just put it on top of the TV, now they are an absolute hassle... It only obstructs full-screen viewing, but I think it looks a little dodgy with it in front of the TV Now just have to deal with the aftermath of scattered books and dust from the move
Bus_Boy Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Wall mount the telly, or stand it on the speaker itself, though the speaker looks a little on the smaller side for that. I paid $150 to have my 50'' wall mounted, you could do it yourself quite easy but i wanted some sort of insurance should it fall off the wall.
Darryl Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Or perhaps if you decide to get a new cabinet get one that fits the centre where the Playstation currently is.
Grumpy Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I like the black look. As to what can be done with the centre speaker, why not get a black block of wood to sit the TV on which should lift it up enough to clear the speaker?
Batty Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 A potential dark sider if I ever saw one nice setup KiZ. I sit my TV on a pair of speakers by the way.

Would love to wall mount, but I am restricted by the rental trap I like the black look. Yeah, I think the black looks okay, the adjacent wall is totally full of books, so it is offset nicely. That is probably what I'll end up doing, I propped it up on some old encyclopaedias, it just looks really goofy sitting up that high for some reason. I'd probably get used to it though! Nice pink rock. Thanks man, salt lamp for ambiance A potential dark sider if I ever saw one nice setup KiZ. I sit my TV on a pair of speakers by the way. Thanks man, might try and old pair of speakers, I am just worried about stability... It's a big, goofy piece of fragility at the end of the day, that's why I liked the projector so much, I could have the big screen with only a little box tucked in a corner. Shame about the lamp reliability, can't wait 'till LED projectors become awesome and affordable!!
Guest Muon Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Hmm...salt rock & hifi equipment, not my favourite combo. They do look nice though
Bus_Boy Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Is that shelf adjustable? Could you squeeze the centre in there if it is? It would restrict flow to the vents on the amp which i know s a no no, but unless it get's super hot it might not be a worry, maybe even mount a cooling fan behind the unit. Sounds like a bit of trouble but sometimes you need to go to lengths to find a solution.
cableconnoisseur Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 That salt lamp adds more than ambience................ You're not missing much (of the picture that is) by leaving the centre speaker exactly where it is. Alternatively, if your cabinet is 'deep' enough, move the TV forward and place the speaker behind the TV in pretty much the same spot it is now in? I don't believe it will make too much of a difference behind the TV.............try it and see for yourself.

I have moved it to the sub now, it is just such a soft light to have on when watching TV; really enhances the blacks (I couldn't afford the model with LED micro dimming ). Is that shelf adjustable? I can then stand the PS3 on its side, but I am really worried about the heat and it looks crowded as... That salt lamp adds more than ambience................ It's not so much the missing picture that worries me, but that is where they still always put subtitles in movies (even 16:9 ). Also, it blocks the 3D transmitter for some reason and the 3D goes to **** in action scenes (not that I use it that much, so not a huge concern).
L J T Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 While not being an ideal solution, I like to place my centre channels on a dedicated speaker stand. I just put them on the stand when they are being used. Two smaller stands work well for this also and can be easily put out of the way when not in use.
