IMHO Dave why don't you save a bit longer and buy something a lot better instead of something you can only afford now?

Buying new will also mean when you upgrade either of these two TT's later you will drop some coin in the process.

Secondhand really is the way to go if you want something so much better, and should you upgrade later you may not lose any money at all if you're a shrewd purchaser?

There's plenty of stuff in the classifieds here, and maybe put an ad in the WTB section and see what comes to you?

I never buy what I can afford, I always wait and save and then buy what I really want - within reason of course!

Cheers, Pete.

I own the Debut Carbon and I would definitely have to say go the Rega over the Debut. While the Debut is a solid first turntable, I feel that it has some flaws which the Rega addresses. It does suffer from sibilance and inner groove distortion and just doesn't seem as refined as the Rega.

I would recommends spending another $200.00 and getting a new Project RPM 5.1

Agreed

The Debut/Carbon just didnt do it for me when i owned one. Just recently i went to the RPM5.1 and its just better, better put together better arm with a counterweight that doesnt just suit the cart that comes with it.

second hand P3 would be the way i would go.

The TT/Vinyl world is so addictive.

I started with a Rega P1. Initially just to test the waters if vinyl was for me. And, unfortunately for my poor wallet, vinyl is for me. So like the comments above, down the slippery slope I went.

I was really happy with the Rega P1 w/ Ortofon OM30 for a couple of years, until I got a good DAC, which started to outperform the P1 setup.

This is where the slippery slope started for me, and I moved on to a second hand Rega P3 w/ Ortofon 2M Red. Then from the P3 to another second hand modified Rega P3-24.

Rega TT are great because they are simple to operate and maintain, and there are a host of "upgrade" parts when there is that inevitable earning to "upgrade" comes.

So, if you even have an inkling that vinyl playback is for you, then I 2nd flemo's suggestions to save up for longer for something higher in the range. The second hand marked is also a great place to start.

appreciate the advice my budget is only restricted due to this being my first tt and l only want something to test the waters as bepop mentioned, l will take a look at the Rega P1 and the 5.1, the budget can be stretched if the difference is noticable. Where would people reccomend in Sydney to sample both tt`s

Retail pricing is $1095, is discounting that aggressive on tt`s

No its haggling skills, but take a look at it in sydney, if you're interested I can recommend a Melbourne Store where I got mine from for that price, and it also included a Blue 2M Cart and lots of added bits like record cleaners, etc.

Oh and not to forget 10 records for free, used ones of course but in very good condition.

davemorg, I bought my Rega P1 a few years ago from Sydney HiFi at Castle Hill. At that time, they did a really good deal for a the Rega P1. So maybe check them out. Looking at their website, they sell both Rega and Project TTs.
