braddo Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 (edited) Looking at the volume pot on a 40w integrated amp I own, it has 2x4 pins, instead of the usual 2x3 pins. Been doing some reading, and apparently the last 2 pins are a 'loudness tap'. As far as my reading has taken me, this means as I listen at lower levels with this amp, the bass and treble is boosted. First thing that came to my mind was 'bass boost'. Now my question is, is this something I want to avoid? kinda like an inbuilt tone control that changes with the volume. Is this idea good or bad?? If I throw in an Alps pot (2x3 pins), and don't hook into the 'loudness tap', will the amp be purer, or less 'coloured', less crap for the signal to be involved with? Any thoughts this? VanArn Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 It is in cases where the loudspeakers lack detail at low listening levels, that a loudness control can prove to be worthwhile.Better implementations switch out the feature or use a seperate adjustable control to allow more versatility. If your amplifier does not allow for the loudness contour to be switched out,you may like to try shorting out the capacitor that goes from the tapping point on the 'pot' via a resistor to ground.Only modify one channel to allow a valid comparision to be made. Apart from the contouring of extreme frequencies,a loudness circuit should not have any undesirable effects.
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Hi Brad, How're they hangin? If the pot with the loudness tap is a cheaper quality type (and they usually are), then substituting a good quality 3 pin pot won't cause any problems.

Yep I understand the amp sounds pretty good as is almost as good as some $$$$ to be honest but it all comes down to source and speakers as always. We'll see. Doing a bit of playing around and getting rid of some garbage has not hurt ----so far----- Thanks for the input. Edited September 6, 2012 by braddo

I'm going good thanks. and thanks for the answer. Will have to catch up soon some time, got some nice vintage solid state pinball machines for you to play, where are you?? Come round some time. I'll throw in the Alps and report back. The original was a cheapie by looks alone I'd throw in an expensive jobie but save that for another amp. Thanks for the advice both you guys.

I'll just tell SWMBO that I'm making a service call to the Gong. That'll work. I'll throw in the Alps and report back.
