jamesg11 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Decided to definitely get the Senn 800s, but I need ~4m connection to my Mytek dac/ head amp. (will look at other amps later, ...). What are the issues involved here, & what options do I have to maximise SQ? Suggestions?
Krispy Audio Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Are you going to build yourself? Plenty of options, and the connectors can be sourced overseas. One suggestion I'd make is to decide if you need 1/4" or 1/8" plug and just use the one (rather than an adaptor). I'd also go for 24awg at the largest, and try a braided configuration for flexibility. 1
jamesg11 Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 I'm open to either dyi or off-shelf - & what about balanced? I'll spend the dosh if I can be assured SQ will be there. I'm inclined to go with 1/4".
Catostylus Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 There might be something here you can use: http://www.headphone.com/headphones/sennheiser-hd-800.php Scroll down for the accessory cables.
Krispy Audio Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Whether you go unbalanced or balanced will depend on your headphone amp. If yours has both, investigate (possibly email the retailer/distributor/manufacturer) as to the implementation and which one the amp was designed around primarily. The best I've heard the 800s was in a Beta22 in 4-board config. If you can solder, make them for sure. Try a 3 or 4 wire litz braid using stranded 28awg high purity copper. Also, check that whatever connector you get is copper (can be plated) and not brass (as a lot are).
firefly0071 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 The best dedicated headphone amp I have heard is the Beta 22. However, there are some rare and expensive models outside of Australia.
DoggieHowser Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 http://www.aloaudio.com/reference-8-salty-pepper-for-sennheiser-hd800 You can usually email them for a 4m run if 10ft isn't enough
Nada Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Damn that's an expensive cord !! well another HD800 cable is twice that price DIY is much better If the Mytek does balance headphone out via a dedicated balanced amp use it...otherwise single ended is indicated
Full Range Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 I purchased an extension cord that's normaly used on a guitar From memory it cost $ 25 new that's far less than if I made my own
Krispy Audio Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Demand for 1/4" extension cables is far greater than HD800 ones, and quality is less scrutinised.
