Hi guys.

I picked up a nice 4 shelf fully welded steel Soundstyle equipment stand last week.

It's at the powder coaters getting a refurb as we speak.

When I get it back, I'm hoping to tweek it to kill the extensive ringing with some expanding foam sprayed down into each of the 3 legs.

I don't want to mass load it as I don't want it to store energy and so thought the foam stuff you can buy in a can would make light work (haha) of things.

Or how about some pumice gravel from somewhere?

Would appreciate your comments though.

My speaker stands, open frame Epos like design, will cop the same treatment if this works (although they're mass loaded like crazy anyway which would help them in their application).

Silicon may take a long time to cure???

Doesn't really change the dampening properties.

Maybe the Green Glue?

The cheapest way would be a water based sealant like No More Gaps.

That and similar products can be had for less than three dollars a tube.

Some shrinkage might be had over time but I doubt it would matter too much.

You can mass load it with dried sand or garnet without adding much mass as you don't have to fill it, just add enough to stop the metal ringing.

Wouldn't not filling it defeat the purpose of 'mass'?

The reason to fill it is to lower the resonant frequency and reduce the amplitude. It doesn't have to be full to do that. I never filled my StandDesign rack any more than 1/4 full.

Yeah, my stand rings like a bell so I need to change the resonance, preferably lowering it.

I just had a thought; we have a product called shell grit for our bird. It's a lightweight, inert, calcium/chalk rich, granulated medium.

This way, I could use more for better damping than sand without the mass of sand, and it's much easier to remove than foam if I change my mind.

It's cheap too.
