Guest JohnA Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 read this today, so how many here, download music from itunes and how many have read the terms and conditions that go with it. I have never downloaded any music from itunes and after reading this, never will. In an intriguing move, The Daily Mail is reporting that 'Die Hard' star Bruce Willis is considering taking legal action against computer giant Apple to gain the right to pass his iTunes song collection on to his daughters after his death. you technically only 'borrow' the music you purchase from the store under license, and upon your death the music is no longer yours, and can't be passed on to anyone else. In technical terms, Apple's terms and conditions state that you're buying the right to listen to the music, what they call a non-transferable license, and that you don't actually own it. Which means that you can't pass it on after death. It also means that if you've amassed a rather large music collection from the digital music distributor, it's worth bupkis when you die.
Grumpy Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Never downloaded music and I don't think I will. 1
Guest JohnA Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Never downloaded music and I don't think I will. same mate, prefer to purchase the cd or vinyl however, this is interesting as you are still paying for the music, so it should be yours, not the property of apple. Its lie purchasing vinyl and then been told you cant pass on your collection to your kids.
Monkeyboi Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Yep, I prefer the tangible media too. Cheers, Alan R.
Gee Emm Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Most large companies are not your friend, irrespective of what they imply. I find it interesting that in some cases it is actually more expensive to buy a license of downloaded music, rather than purchase a physical copy. I also find it interesting that you 'agree' to pages & pages & pages of legal contract to legally download music. And they wonder why there be pirates!
Demondes Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) Ouch Itunes, not only do you get the benefits of compressed music (joke), but it also appears that you do not own outright, itunes is looking kinda expensive. Itunes as a death duty Ha ha I am not fanatical about owning the media anymore. I happily will buy LP's, CD's, Blu rays, and digital (uncompressed media) where the price is right. Have probably bought a total of 40 itunes songs during last 6 years, but probably nothing in the last 5. Just not good value Edited September 3, 2012 by Demondes
Demondes Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) When I first clicked on this topic. I thought I would be laughing senseless about some songs that Bruce Willis had released to iTunes. i.e. a commercial dispute about music rights. He actually did release an album in 1987, Geez I wonder how bad that is http://www.allmusic.com/artist/bruce-willis-mn0000640042 Hmm, three stars from AMG? Edited September 3, 2012 by Demondes
cheekyboy Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Hard to download vinyl and I haven't bought a CD for three or four years, so no downloading music for me either. Cheers, Keith
Dustin Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 however, this is interesting as you are still paying for the music, so it should be yours, not the property of apple. Its lie purchasing vinyl and then been told you cant pass on your collection to your kids. Yes, except that it isn't the property of Apple either. Apple, just like Amazon or any other seller of music, be it downloaded or streamed is subject to the same thing. It originates at the copyright holder.....the record companies. Even if you possess the CD, you still don't 'own' the music. In fact, while this is likely just a beat up on a slow news day, I'd think Apple, Amazon et al would be happy to increase pressure on the record labels and drag them kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
LogicprObe Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I don't download music either..........................but GO BRUCE!!! 1
richard260 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Thats why i love buying records and cds, You always have a collection thats worth something, You can sell your records anytime you like when you dont wont them anymore.
surprisetech Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Not Apple's fault if Brucey is too apathetic to read the terms and conditions before he outlayed his precious dollars. However, in his defence, I would certainly argue that the Terms and Conditions should be presented in a form that is much more Clear and To-the-point, so people do know what they are, and are not, paying for. Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz: We need to make way for an intergalactic bypass and your planet has been scheduled for demolition. Abe: A bypass? A bypass! Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz: There's no need to get upset. The plans have been on display for 50 of your earth years on Alpha Centauri. Abe: But we've never been to Alpha Centauri. Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz: Oh you've never been? It's only a few light years away! Bloody apathetic people. (walks away). If you can't be bothered to take interest in your local affairs, I don't see why I should be sorry for you people.
Saxon Hall Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Apple has never got any money from me and probably never will. There are plenty of alternatives so they may be killing the "golden goose" In any case I prefer to buy CD's and occasionally Records. CD's can be easily ripped so it is the perfect solution for me. CD's and Records can be easily sold if your tastes change. For example there is a bloke in the FS thread who has just sold a huge amount of LP's in the last couple of days. This would have been an excellent exchange as I am sure his buyers would be very happy to have increased their record collections at a reasonable price. How would he have done that if he had bought them from ITunes? Where is the logic in supposedly buying something that you cannot dispose of as you sit fit? Ridiculous and illogical!
Dustin Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Actually, now that I think about it, the movies our Bruce makes that end up on a DVD or streamed etc. are subject to the exact same copyright!
Captain Crunch Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 The obvious question that hasn't been asked is 'would your kids like to inherit your music collection'? One thing my kids will take great delight in doing upon my demise is the complete removal of all traces of my music collection from this planet! You would think the younger generation would appreciate Neil Young wouldn't you but apparently, he can't hold a candle to the great talents of Pitbull, Carly Rae Jepsom et al! 1
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I have been constantly mystified as to why people deal with Apple. The company is evil. Everything they do is designed to gouge cash from the unsuspecting. They deliberately and consistently stifle any form of competition. 1
Addicted to music Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 I have been constantly mystified as to why people deal with Apple. The company is evil. Everything they do is designed to gouge cash from the unsuspecting. They deliberately and consistently stifle any form of competition. And now Samsung is paying a heavy price! 1
HumanMedia Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Erm no one owns any music they buy, not on record or cd or download. You only own the media it comes on and the personal license to listen to it. Rights are not transferrable on physical media either. I believe Australian law needed special additions to legally allow second hand cd sales. This all happened in the 1970s from recording industry lobbyists all around the world. Nothing to do with iTunes. Sounds like a lot of ignorance and Apple hating to me.
Gee Emm Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Apple hating!? Ignorance!? Isn't the OP conversation that you can't transfer Apple's downloaded music, and that they seem to be performing a slight of hand!? I would think it a valid conversation.
automated Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 The story was fake. http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/09/bruce-willis-not-suing-apple-after-all/
